Cantu Shuts the Door on UHV, Falcons Advance

Victoria, TX – During a night where wind gust reached 40 mph the Fisher Falcons managed to hold off the University of Houston-Victoria Jaguars, 6-5, and advance in the 2013 A.I.I Baseball Championship.

In a highly emotional affair, the Falcons were able to revenge a 4-1 loss they suffered at the hands of the Jaguars in the opening game of the tournament.  The loss eliminates UHV (20-23) from the tournament while Fisher (35-17) moves on the play LSU-Alexandria with the winner gaining the right to play Cal State San Marcos for the 2013 championship.

The Falcons jumped out to an early lead in the 2nd inning when Sammy Alejandro (Hartford, CT) flew out to right center, scoring Yuliano Rodriguez (Toa Alto, PR) on the play.

Fisher extended their lead to five when they pushed across four more runs in the top of the 5th.  Back-to-back singles by Eridani Dume (Boston, MA) and Anthony Peguero (Boston, MA) had runners on 2nd and 3rdVictor Lebron (Union City, NJ) flew out to right, scoring Dume, before walks to Rodriguez and Davidson Peguero (Boston, MA) loaded the bases.

Sophomore Dominic Zaher drove a ball to the wall in right field for a 3-run double to gave the Falcons all the momentum in the rivalry game.

UHV wasn't going down without a fight as the got three runs back in the bottom of the 5th.  Fisher starting pitcher Jefry Castro struggled with his control, walking the bases loaded to start the inning.  A Chad Kruse single and a Tyler Steiner ground out have the Jaguars their first two runs before Ryan Suescum came across to score on a wild pitch.

Moises Melo-Reyes (Methuen, MA) relieved Castro as was able to get out the inning without an further damage being done by UHV.

The Falcons and Jaguars traded runs in the 6th when Dume's sacrifice fly scored Nelson Lopez (Bronx, NY) for Fisher while Dylan Blaha's RBI single got UHV on the board.

Sophomore Chris Cantu (Alamo, TX) pitched the final 3 and 2/3 inning for the Falcons to preserved the victory and collected his 9th save of the year. Cantu kept his composure throughout the night despite continuous gamesmanship between the two teams.

Melo-Reyes earned the win for the Falcons, improving to 3-0 on the year.

The 35th win for the Falcons set a new record for wins in a season.

The Falcons continue their tournament Friday morning at 10AM CST when they square off against LSU-Alexandria in yet another elimination game.
