Falcons complete four game sweep of Confrence foe

After a much needed off day, the Falcons returned to action with A.I.I. Conference rival, the University of Houston-Victoria.   Last season, the Falcons went 0-3 during the regular season vs. UHV and then 1-1 in the playoffs.  The last time they faced each other was in an elimination game in the conference tournament where Fisher ended the UHV season with 7-6 victory.

In game 1, the Falcons had to face a pitcher that they have not beaten in 4 tries over the previous 3 seasons, Cory Carter.   The Falcons sent Victor Mendez (JR-Lawrence, MA) to the mound to square off.  After 3 innings, both teams were tied at 2-2.  The Falcons finally got to Carter by way of the bunt.  Carter made 2 errors fielding the bunt which led to 4 runs being scored in the inning.  The score stayed 6-2 until the UHV offense put up 2 more runs in the 6th cutting the lead in half.  Mendez gave way to closer, Chris Cantu (JR-Alamo, TX) in the 7th.  Cantu would allow 2 runs to score sending the game into extra innings.  On the first pitch of the 8th inning, Victor Lebron (SR-Union City, NJ) drove a ball into deep center field to record his first triple of the season.  He would score on a ground ball by Sander Vargas (JR-Lawrence, MA).  This would prove to be all the Falcons would need.  Michael Hersey (FR-Norton, MA) came on to get 3 quick outs on 9 pitches to record his first career save.  Cantu got the win.  Mendez went 6 strong innings allowing just 3 earned runs.   "Every time we have played them over the last two seasons, the games have been nail biters.  I didn't expect this to be different.  Beating Carter was something we talked about the night before at our meeting.  It was good to finally get to him.  He's been tough on us, but our guys battled.  After giving up the lead in the last inning, our guys could have folded, but Lebron came up big like a senior should", said Head Coach Dulin.  FINAL- 7-6 FISHER.

Game 2 of the matchup was another nail biter.  The Falcons sent Moises Melo (SR- Methuen, MA) to the mound in his first start versus UHV.  Fisher jumped out to an early lead scoring 2 in the first inning, then 2 more in the 3rd inning and added a 5th run in the 4th.   Going into the bottom of the 5th, Melo was cruising until the UHV short stop, Dylan Blaha, hit a 3-run home run to cut the Falcon lead to 5-4.  Melo gave way to Nelson Lopez who recorded 1 out and then Michael Hersey to get the last out of the 5thPedro Escarfullery came in to pitch 2 scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season.  Offensively, Davidson Peguero had 3 hits while Victor Lebron added 2.  The big bat of the day came from Yhonathan Santelises who hit a towering home run over the left field fence to plate 2 runs.  "Once again, we had a chance to put them away, but that team always finds a way to scratch back into it.  Our pitchers did a great job holding that lead for 2+ innings.  That bull pen was tired but they came through for us.", said Head Coach Scott Dulin. FINAL 5-4 FISHER.

The next day, the two teams squared off for games 3 and 4 of the series.  In game 3, John Tangherlini took the mound and squared off with UHV'S, Nathan Faulkenstine, who has had the Falcon's number in the past.   With neither team scoring in the first two innings, Nelson Lopez (SO- Brooklyn, NY) led off with a walk.  He then stole second base and moved to third on a Lebron ground ball.  Sander Vargas (JR-Lawrence, MA) singled to RF, driving in Lopez to take the lead 1-0.   This would be all Tangherlini would need.   He went the distance throwing a complete game, 3 hit shutout.  "John was tremendous today.  He was "shoving" all game long.  Every time he got into trouble, he was able to bear down and get the big strikeout. ", said Scott Dulin.  FINAL- 1-0 FISHER.

Game 4, the final game of the series, was no different than the first 3 games of the series.  Fisher sent Shawn Carlson (JR-Andover, MA) to mound.  In the second inning, Yuliano Rodriguez (SO- Bayamon, PR) got a 1-out single.  Elvis Perez (JR- NY,NY) came to plate and hit a triple to score Rodriguez.   That run and lead would stand throughout the rest of the way as Carlson twirled a gem.  Carlson would go the distance, striking out 6 while allowing just 5 hits for his first complete game shutout in a Falcon uniform.  FINAL- 1-0 FISHER
