Baseball Drops Game 2 to UMaine-Farmington 3-2

Northborough, Mass. - Fisher College's baseball team took on University of Maine-Farmington (UMF) in the second game of their split double header Monday at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass. The Falcons dropped the game 3-2 and move to 5-10 on the season with the loss; UMF improves to 8-2.

UMF started the game off threatening the Falcons with a run with a leadoff single and advancement to third on the next two plays. Fisher pitcher struck out the number four batter to escape the inning unharmed. In the bottom half of the inning, Dominic Zaher (Chelmsford, Mass.) led the game off with a hit by pitch. Jessue Alverado (New York, N.Y.) then sacrifice bunted to move Zaher over to second. Dylan Moss (Newfoundland, Canada) then singled to left field to move Zaher to third.  Zaher scored when Yuliano Rodgriguez (Toa Alto, P.R.) popped up to the first baseman, but the fielder dropped the ball putting the Falcons on top 1-0.

Joshua Torres (St. Croix, U.S.V.I.) dominated the next few innings on the hump for Fisher. Between Torres and the defense for the Falcons, the Beavers were held at zero runs. In the Fisher third inning, Zaher led the inning with another hit by pitch, stole second, advanced on a ground ball, and then scored on a wild pitch, putting the Falcons up 2-0.

UMF retaliated with a two-run fifth inning. A lead-off walk put a runner on first for the Beavers. The runner advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, was hit to third on a Flayhan double, and scored on a throwing miscue by the right fielder. UMF cut the Falcon lead to 2-1. The Beavers continued to pressure the Falcons in the fifth as they tied the score at 2. Torres and teammates were able to get out of that inning without allowing any more runs.

The Beavers struck again and went on top of the Falcons 3-2 in the top of the sixth when Keene singled to center field. Ryne McNary (St. Paul, Minn.) then took the mound for the Falcons, relieving Torres. A misread fly ball by Fisher scored the UMF third run and put a runner on third. McNary powered through and held that runner at third; getting out of the inning.

Fisher threatened in the bottom of the seventh inning, but was unable to gain the victory. Harold Nogueras (Toa Alto, P.R.) pinch hit, hitting a double to rally with one out. Nogueras was left on second and the Beavers secured the 3-2 win.

Zaher was a key offensive player for the Falcons despite going 0-1; he walked three times on the night and scored both Falcon runs. Another key offensive player for the Falcons was Nogueras going 1-1 with a double in a pinch-hitting situation. Torres threw a tough game going five innings and only giving up five hits and striking out three.

Fisher's next contest will be Tuesday, March 31, at 7:00 p.m. against Colby-Sawyer College. The game will be held at Pappas Field on the campus of Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, N.H.
