Tight Battle Kicks Off Baseball’s Spring Season

Northborough, Mass. – Fisher College's baseball team carried a 3-3 record into their first game of the spring season. The baseball team began their 2017-2018 season back in September and kicked off the second half of their season on Wednesday night with a showdown against the AMCats of Anna Maria. The Falcons fell to Anna Maria 2-1 in a single 9-inning game held at the New England Baseball Complex, putting the Falcons under .500 with a 3-4 record.

Angel Perez-Vargas opened the game with a 1-out single to left field.  Perez-Vargas was then able to steal second, but was left stranded on base at the conclusion of the half inning.  The AMCats went down 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the first.  Another scoreless inning for both teams brought senior Cody Mercier to the plate for the Falcons in the top half of the 3rd inning.  Mercier belted a homer to right center field to put the Falcons up 1-0.  The next three batters were retired quickly closing out the top of the third.

Both teams battled hard over the next few innings, but Anna Maria took the lead in the bottom of the 7th inning. Yamil Delgado walked two batters and gave up a double to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1-out.  Norberto Ceballos relieved Delgado, but an error by Fisher's shortstop allowed the first run to score for Anna Maria making it a tie ballgame.  With runners on the corners, a sacrifice fly pushed another AMCat runner across the plate for the home team to take a 2-1 lead.  Ceballos got the final batter of the inning to go down swinging.

Fisher was able to put runners on the bases in the remaining two innings, but was unable to push another run across home plate to extend the game. The first of two games against Anna Maria within the next week saw a 2-1 final in the AMCats favor.

Mercier led the offense for the Falcons with his lone homerun.  Perez-Vargas and Joshua Rogers both added a hit for Fisher's three hits.  Anna Maria held similar offense statistics as the Falcons, with three players going 1-for-4 at the plate.

The Falcons will regroup after the loss and face the AMCats again on Sunday February 18 at the New England Baseball Complex.  First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. for a single 9-inning game.
