Falcons hold on late, tip Roos 82-79

The Falcons were able to knock down their free throws and turn up the defensive pressure to ensure a 82-79 non-conference win over SUNY-Canton Wednesday night in Fectau-Leary.  For the fourth straight game the Falcons pulled out a close victory and have been doing so with more intensity on the defensive end.

Fisher improved to 7-16 on the year and is in the midst of a four game winning streak. The game was decided on the charity strip with the host going 21-29 (72%) while the visiting Kangaroos only completed 58% (7-12).

The game was tied 35-35 at half as each team relied heavily on the three point shot.  SUNY-Canton shot 42% (15-36) from the floor in the opening 20 minutes but was only 3-13 (23%) from behind the arc. The Falcons shot 45% (11-24) from the floor but were a more efficient 5-8 (63%) from three point land.  In the second half each team shot it better, SUNY going 17-36 (47%) and Fisher connecting on 52% (15-29).

Fisher was paced by Dennis Norford's 19 points and 14 rebounds. Norford, coming off his second consecutive AMC Player of the Week honors, raised his career rebound total to 771.  He sits just seven rebounds shy of surpassing Oscar Brown's school record of 777.

The Roos and the Falcons traded three-point shots down the stretch but Fisher was able to make the last one to ice the game.  Chris Green was 4-5 from behind the arc while Zach Pope went 3-5 from three to pace the Falcons.  Green's career high 17 point effort was capped off by a two handed breakaway dunk, which gave all the momentum to the Falcons. Pope finished with 14 points.

McCorkle, along with Norford, notched a double-double, pulling down 11 boards and contributing 13 points in 30 minutes.

The visiting Kangaroos were led by forward Irving Cato's 21 points and 11 rebounds.  No other Kangaroo had over four rebounds as Fisher controlled the glass 44-26.

Fisher will look to make it five wins in a row when they host AMC rival Daemen College.  Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00p.m. on Saturday, January 21, 2012.
