Men's Basketball Drops Thriller to UMPI 61-60

Presque-Isle, ME- University of Maine-Presque Isle didn't lead Sunday for long, but led when it mattered most, notching a 61-60 thriller over talented Fisher.

The teams traded punches back and forth early in the contest; Fisher paced by Jameel Yousif, and the Owls getting early scoring from junior Chase Vicaire and rebounding from sophomore Brandon McGill. Fisher gained control of the first half with big threes from Ira Haywood, but Maine-Presque Isle was able to hang around with contributions from freshman Maurice Harris and freshman Trevor Lovely off the bench. As it was, the Falcons enjoyed a 31-25 halftime lead.

Both teams came out cold to begin the second half, but the Owls were able to creep closer in the first 10 minutes of the second half, with big finishes from Harris and Vicaire. Fisher remained in the lead even late into the contest, but Maine-Presque Isle made some furious runs, including freshman Kevin Collins hitting a three with two seconds on the shot clock and then converting an old-fashion three-point play in the next possession.

Late in the game, Maine-Presque Isle trailed by two, 60-58, when Vicaire made a three with 13 seconds on the clock to give the Owls the 61-60 advantage. Maine-Presque Isle forced a miss in the final possession for the Falcons, who also missed a tip opportunity. Sophomore Jordan Cook snatched the board with two seconds remaining. After missing his first free throw, he missed the second intentionally. Fisher called a time out and tried a desperate runner at the buzzer, but the shot went behind the glass giving the Owls the thrilling win.

Tyler Shular had a total of seven points in today's contest. His seven points gave him 1,007 points in his career, hitting the 1,000 mark in yesterday's match-up versus University of Maine-Fort Kent.

The Falcons will hit the court again on Tuesday, December 9, when they host Bard College. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 pm at Fecteau-Leary Gymnasium in Lynn, MA.
