Fisher slips by UMFK to close out classic; 65-61

 Lynn, Massachusetts - The Fisher College men's basketball team moves to 2-0 on the season, closing out the weekend with a 65-61 win over the University of Maine-Fort Kent. UMFK drops to 2-2 on the season with the loss to the Falcons Saturday afternoon.

 

Malik Wilson (St. Louis Park, Minnesota) opened up the scoring for the Falcons after 30 seconds to give them a small 2-0 lead. Almost two minutes passed before any additional points were added to the board until a three-pointer from UMFK to put the Bengals up 3-2 over the Falcons. Aaron Penn (Atlanta, Georgia) and Wilson put up seven points for the Falcons to give them a 9-3 lead over the Bengals with 15:01 in the first half.

 

In the next seven minutes, the Bengals went on a 13-9 run over Fisher to come within two points, 18-16 with 7:26 left in the half. Kyle Holmes (Hamden, Connecticut) hit back-to-back shots from behind the arc to give the Falcons a 24-16 lead. Bengal Qaadir Ali hit two free throws for UMFK with 42 seconds left in the first half to close the gap to three points, 31-28.

 

Tyler Shular (Norwalk, Connecticut) opened up the second half with a layup for the Falcons to change the score to 33-28. Darrell Grady (Staten Island, New York) sunk a three to increase the Falcon lead by eight, 36-28. UMFK closed the gap with a jumper, but Grady stepped to the line after being fouled and sunk both shots to reinstate the lead to eight, 38-30.

 

Shular increased the lead to 11 with just over 10 minutes left to play in the game when he nailed a layup to bring the score to 49-38. Joe McCloskey hit a jumper, a layup, and free throw to quickly cut the Falcon lead to six, 49-43. Shots went back and forth, but UMFK brought their score within one with a layup made by Benson Arogbo, 58-57. Back-to-back sunk Falcon shots put Fisher back up four, but not before a Bengal sunk a shot with 42 seconds left in the game. Holmes was fouled and sent to the line, finalizing the score at 65-61 after sinking both shots.

 

Holmes was the lead scorer for the Falcons with 24 points and grabbed five rebounds. Wilson and Shular were also top contributors for Fisher with 11 and 10 points, respectively. McCloskey was the lead scorer for UMFK with a double-double, 29 points and 13 boards. 

 

Fisher College will be back in action on Tuesday, November 17, when the team heads to Wenham, Massachusetts to take on Gordon College in the Bennett Athletic Center at 7:30 p.m.
