Wildcats dominate Falcons

Lynn, Massachusetts – Johnson and Wales University (JWU) of Miami used all their offense to contribute to their overpowering victory over the Falcons in an NAIA contest Friday evening. The Wildcats put up 86 points in the match-up while the Falcons only managed 48 points. 

 

With the loss, the Falcons fall to 3-5 on the season while the Wildcats move to 5-4.

 

JWU won the tip-off, but a foul turned the ball over to the Falcons. Malik Wilson (St. Louis Park, Minnesota) opened the scoring for the Falcons, putting them up 2-0 over the Wildcats. The lead didn't last long as JWU put up a basket the next possession. Geodice Ortiz (Denver, Colorado) went on a solo five-point run for the Falcons to put the team up 7-2 over the Wildcats.

 

Darrell Grady (Staten Island, New York) made a three-point jump shot, giving the Falcons a 12-4 lead with 16:21 on the clock. Jumaoke Smith netted five points for the Wildcats, closing the gap to three points, 12-9, Falcons lead. Frank Bennett hit one behind the arc to knot the game at 14, but Jonathan Lafontant hit another three to take a 17-14 lead over the Falcons.

 

Fisher took back the lead with 7:38 left when Tyler Shular (Norwalk, Connecticut) hit two free throws.  Gino Fils-Aime hit a layup with just under four minutes left to play to give JWU the lead for only the second time on the night, 26-25. The Wildcats held onto the lead 37-29 heading into the half.

 

Bennett led all scorers in the first half with eight points while two other Wildcats (Smith, Fils-Aime) had six apiece. Grady, Ortiz, and Holmes paced the Falcons with five points apiece while Shular, Wilson, and Anthony Kellum (Rancho Cucamonga, California) had four points.

 

Coming off the break, the Wildcats proved their offensive skills, going on a 20-0 run in just over six minutes, taking a 57-29 lead. Brandon Robinson (Fort Washington, Maryland) shut down the Wildcat offensive run when he was fouled; he hit both free throws earned, 57-31. Fisher's offense struggled the remainder of the game while JWU continued to put up another 29 points throughout the rest of the game. 

 

The buzzer sounded with JWU in possession of the ball, closing out the game with an 86-48 victory over the Falcons.

 

Bennett ended the game with a total of 14 points and two rebounds, out-scoring all players. Fils-Aime and Ricardo Suarez followed suit with 11 points apiece and four and five rebounds respectively.

 

Shular was the only Falcon to hit double digits in the match-up, scoring 12 points and grabbing nine rebounds. Brodric Smith (Los Angeles, California) scored six points and grabbed three boards in the loss.

 

The Falcons will hit the court Saturday, December 12, at 4:00 p.m. as they finish their December Classic against the College of Saint Joseph of Vermont in the Fecteau-Leary Gymnasium in Lynn, Massachusetts.
