Shular, Falcons defeat Fighting Saints

Lynn, Mass. – A dominant performance by Falcon senior Tyler Shular (Norwalk, Connecticut) propelled Fisher College to a narrow 89-81 point victory over the College of Saint Joseph's of Vermont on Saturday.

With the win, Fisher College men's basketball improves to 4-5 on the season while the Fighting Saints fall to 7-3.

Although CSJ was able to take a quick 4-0 lead, the Falcons went on a 10-0 run to take a 10-4 lead over the Fighting Saints early in the first half.

The teams traded blows in the first half with the Falcon offense, led by Shular's 10-point first half effort, edging the Saints 41-32 at the buzzer.

Antonio Gordon was the dominant force early for CSJ with 11 of the teams' first half points.

The second half opened a little slower for both teams with Darrell Grady (Staten Island, New York) netting the first shot almost a minute into the half.

In spite of the sluggish start, Fisher continued to keep the Fighting Saints at a distance, at one point advancing their lead to 18. But Randy Arrington hit a shot from behind the arc with just under three minutes left to play in the game, to carve the deficit to 10 points.

Kyle Holmes (Hamden, Conn.) hit a free throw to ice the game at 89-81 with a minute left. The teams traded fouls until the clock hit all zeroes and the Falcons took home the vitory.

Shular finished the game scoring 27 points and grabbing five rebounds. Brodrick Smith scored 15 points, and Aaron Penn was just a rebound shy of a double-double scoring 14 points with nine rebounds. Gordon and Kyle Houston were the leading scorers for the Fighting Saints with 16 points and 15 points respectively.

The Falcons will take on Johnson and Whales University of Providence on Monday, December 14, at 7:00 p.m.
