Falcons mauled by Wildcats

Providence, Rhode Island – An early lead and active offense powered Johnson and Whales University of Providence past Fisher College 104-75 Monday evening.

With the loss the Falcons drop to 4-6 on the season, while the Wildcats improve to 9-1, winning their ninth game in a row.

The Wildcat offense paced the game quickly with a quick 7-0 lead over the Falcons.

Aaron Penn (Atlanta, Georgia) hit the first shot for Fisher College cutting the early JWU lead to 7-2 with just over a minute played in the first half. Three pointers by Penn and Tyree Gross (West Roxbury, Mass.) put the Falcons in the lead for the first time in the game, 8-7.

The JWU offense heated up as the teams traded blows as the first 20 minutes wound down. In spite of a late 12-6 run, the Falcons trailed 40-30 at the buzzer.

Ortiz, Gross, and Holmes paced the Falcons in the first half, scoring seven, five, and five points respectively. Quarry Greenaway led all shooters scoring 18 points in the half. Teammate Tom Garrick helped the Wildcats with 10 points in the first 20 minutes.

Ortiz opened the second half with a jump shot to cut the Wildcat lead to eight, 40-32.  Unfortunately that set off a 14-0 Wildcat run to advance the lead to 54-32 early in the second half.

Fisher tried in vain to chip away at JWU's lead over the remaining roughly 15 minutes of play. The Wildcats would end up with a 104-75 victory.

Kyle Holmes (Hamden, Conn.) led the Falcon attack with 23 points and eight rebounds.  Ortiz (11 points), Shular (10 points, 5 rebounds), and Penn (10 points, 2 rebounds) also contributed to the Falcons 75 points.  Greenaway finished with a double-double, 37 points and 10 rebounds while Garrick worked 24 points and five rebounds in the Wildcat victory.

Fisher College will be back on the court Wednesday, December 16, when they travel to Mitchell College in Connecticut for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off in an NCAA-NAIA cross match-up.
