Shular, men’s basketball dominate MCLA 99-85

Lynn, Mass. – Senior Tyler Shular (Norwalk, Conn.) paced the way with 30 points to push Fisher College over the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts on Saturday afternoon in an NCAA-NAIA cross matchup.

The Falcons improve to 11-8 on the season with the victory while MCLA drops to 4-13.

Kyle Holmes (Hamden, Conn.) opened up the scoring netting a jumper on a pass from Aaron Penn (Orlando, Fla.).  Penn then netted a shot in the paint to give the Falcons a 4-0 lead over the Trailblazers.  Fisher quickly took an 11-0 lead before Isshiah Coleman hit a free-throw to cut Fisher's lead to 10, 11-1. 

The Falcons continued to direct the first half going on a 13-6 run to take a 24-7 lead over MCLA.  Shular hit back to back three pointers before Penn committed his first foul bringing Khalil Paul to the line, netting both free throws. Fisher's offense powered over MCLA going on a 29-20 run heading into half-time.

Fisher held onto a 30 point lead heading into the half, 59-29.  Malik Wilson (St. Louis Park, Minn.) led the Falcons offensively with 14 points and one rebound.  Shular and Aaron Penn followed with 12 points and 10 points respectively. 

Two Trailblazers paced the way with six points apiece, Khalil Paul and Dakari Hannah-Wornum.  Other key Trailblazers were Anderson Dalmace and Collin Parrott, both with four points. 

MCLA opened up the second half with Paul Maurice hitting a layup changing the score to 59-31.  Scoring went back and forth for the next two minutes with MCLA cutting the Falcon lead to 24 with a Maurice three pointer, 68-44 Falcons.

Ki-Shawn Monroe hit a three pointer for the Trailblazers, but not before Penn hit a jumper to continue the Falcon lead.  Holmes hit a layup with 13:54 on the clock to give the Falcons a 25 point lead back, 74-49.

The Trailblazers continued to fight cutting the Falcon lead to 12 points with two minutes left to play, 94-82 Fisher.  Brodric Smith (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored two from the line to give the Falcons 99 points with one minute left on the clock. Careem Kirksey hit a three pointer with 0:22 on the clock for the Trailblazers, finalizing the score at 99-85.

Three MCLA players scored 11 second half points to dominate the second half scoring with 56 points to Fisher's 40 points.  Hannah-Wornum led the Trailblazers offense with 14 points and 15 rebounds.  Maurice and Kirksey scored 13 points apiece while both grabbing three rebounds.

Shular paced the Falcons with 30 points and five rebounds.  Wilson continued to shine with 18 points and two rebounds while Penn and Smith scored 12 points.  Holmes added 10 points to the board for the Falcons' offense.

Fisher will return to action on Wednesday, January 27 in a men's and women's double header against the College of St. Joseph's of Vermont in the Fecteau-Leary Gymnasium, Lynn, Mass.  Women will tip-off at 5:00 p.m. with the men immediately following.
