The Falcons Fall To The Nighthawks, 81-74

Lynn, MA - The Men's Basketball team got off to a hot start tonight, hitting five of their first eight shots and leading by as many as nine points in the first half, but a barrage of three-pointers from the Newbury Nighthawks (6-9) clinched the 81-74 victory for the visitors. The Falcons have played hard over the last six games despite going 0 for their last 6, as the average margin is less than five points over that span.

The Falcons would hold the lead much of the first half, and a 10-3 run over 3:30 minutes would give them their biggest lead of the game going up 22-13 on a Kyle Snowden (Santa Cruz, CA) lay-up with 12:05 remaining in the first. The Nighthawks responded with their own 11-2 run, knotting the game at 24 a piece with 7:48 on the clock and forcing a Fisher timeout. Back-to-back Chris Sorapuru (Temecula, CA) buckets would give the Falcons the lead back at 28-25 at the 4:35 mark. An Abrian Dickson (Indian Wells, AZ) three-pointer put the Falcons up 31-27, however a 10-2 run for Newbury would give the visitors a 37-33 lead heading into the break.

Anthony Lewis continued his hot shooting out of the break as he hit his third and fourth three-pointers of the contest to start the second half and tie the game up at 39-39 with 18:13 left on the clock. The Falcons would regain its first lead of the second half on a Mena Yacoub lay-up five minutes later, putting his team up 49-48. Over the next seven minutes of play it was a seesaw battle for the lead as there were five lead changes and three times during that span. With the Falcons down two at 61-59, the Nighthawks tried to close out the victory with a 10-2 run capped by back-to-back three-pointers to give the visitors a 71-61 lead with 3:57 left to play. Fisher was not ready to give up though, as they answered with the games next eight points, bringing the score to 71-69 after a pair of Snowden free throws at the 2:32 mark. Newbury was able to close out the victory shooting 10 for 10 in free throws over the last 2:30 minutes of play, sealing it 81-74.

Giovanni Thompson (Kissimmee, FL) led the way for his Falcons as he tallied 17 points, eight rebounds and a pair of steals in the losing effort. Lewis contributed with a season high 16 points while grabbing a team high nine boards and dishing out four assists. Snowden also played well for Fisher as he finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Pierce Weatherspoon and Omar Williams led the Nighthawks all night as they combined for 52 points, including 11 3-pointers. They combined for an impressive 11 for 17 from behind the arc, and proved to be the difference in the contest.

The Falcons will look to get back in the win column this Saturday as they head to Pine Manor College to face the Gators. Tip-off is slated for 3pm in Chestnut Hill, MA.
