Falcons Clipped By Green Mountain

POULTNEY, VT – Freshman midfielder Nazar Zhukovskyy (Stamford, CT) supplied the Eagles with the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 69th minute of play to give Green Mountain College a narrow 3-2 victory over Fisher College in non-conference men's soccer action on Wednesday afternoon at Eagles Game Field.

Much like in their last game, the Eagles got on the scoreboard first to take an early lead when sophomore forward Victor Gollub (Silver Spring, MD) took a mid-air ball and struck it just over the Falcon keepers' outstretched arms and under the cross bar. The strike was made possible after Gollub was freed up from a pass by freshman midfielder Jordan Manikas (Springfield, NY).

Fisher (0-3-0) answered the bell just before halftime in the 41st minute of play with an equalizer as sophomore forward Tyler Gahara (Hooksett, NH) scored his first goal of the season after being sprung by a nice through ball by freshman teammate Henry Maldonado (Everett, MA). The teams would remain scoreless and head into the break tied at 1-1.

Green Mountain (2-3-0) pulled ahead 2-1 when Manikas scored his third goal of the season, heading in a crossing pass by junior Nate Laymon (Ilion, NY) in the 48th minute.

Gahara would score his second marker of the game in the 59th minute when he sent sophomore defender Matthew Miller's (Lake Worth, FL) lead pass inside the left post to knot the game at 2-2.

Zhukovskyy scored his first goal of the season on the penalty kick in the 69th minute of play and the Eagles had just enough to hold the visitors the remainder of the game.

Griffen Shelor (Cedar Park, TX) picked up his second victory by turning aside five shots, while Jose Villagran (Somerville, MA) dropped to 0-3 on the young season despite making four saves.

The Eagles will host SUNY Cobleskill next Wednesday at 4:00 pm. Last year the Eagles beat the Fighting Tigers 4-2, so the visitors will be looking to exact revenge. Fisher next plays on Saturday against King's College (NY); the time of the game will be announced.
