Fisher works win ahead of playoff slate

BENNINGTON, Vt. — An active offensive attack by the Fisher College men's soccer team pushed the Falcons ahead of NCAA foe Southern Vermont College 3-2 Wednesday.

With the victory the Falcons advance to 9-6-3 on the season. They move to post-season play for the first time in program history where they will travel to Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville, Georgia from November 12 through November 14.

After the loss, SVC drops to 4-13. They will wrap up the season at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lesley University.

Fisher fought through rain and a stingy SVC defense to take a 2-0 advantage in the first half before the Mountaineers cut it to a one-goal game with a penalty kick.

Junior Tyler Gahara (Hooksett, N.H.) notched the first score of the day roughly 16-minutes in.

The Falcons would not relinquish the lead.

Gahara collected the ball on the right side of the box, took a few touches and fired his 20th goal of the year into the lower left corner for the 1-0 advantage.

Just over eight minutes later, the Falcons padded their lead as Tom Pugliese (Saugus, California) netted a free kick from Junior Jordan Markovich (Malden, Massachusett).

Fisher maintained its two-goal lead for the next 5:30 until Nikolas Joseph (Coventry, Connecticut) netted SVC's first goal of the game on a penalty shot with 15:14 remaining in the half.

Fisher once again extended its lead to two goals moments before the break.

Pugliese sent home his second goal of the day with 1:36 left to push the lead to 3-1 at the half.

Neither side could put one over the line through the opening 37 minutes of the second half until Southern Vermont trimmed the Fisher lead once again.

Junior Taylor Baker (Hoosick Falls, New York) chipped in a rebound off of a strong save by Falcon freshman keeper Eliseu DiPena (Boston, Massachusetts) to cut the lead to 3-2.

The Falcon defense turned away the Mountaineer defense for the remainder of the game to work the 3-2 win.

DiPena turned away four Mountaineer shots on the win, while SVC keeper Noah Chani (Hoosick Falls, New Tork) blocked seven shots in the loss.
