LYNN, MASS. -- The Fisher College softball team took two victories from the SUNY Dehli Broncos on Tuesday afternoon in exhilarating fashion. In the first game, the Falcons pushed for extra innings, taking the victory in the bottom of the eighth inning. In the second game, the Falcons came from a 7-6 defecite to win the game 14-9.
The Falcons are now 5-13 on the season after the home sweep of SUNY Delhi.
Game 1
In the first inning, Delhi put one runner on from a walk, but the Falcons busted the scoring open in the bottom half of the inning. Freshman Taylor Rowley singled to left field and was almost doubled off when Kristina Brown lined out to the shortstop. Junior Rebecca Collison tripled to right field scoring Rowley from first. Mikayla Zimmerman then reached on an error by the third baseman to score Collison taking a 2-0 lead.
Delhi came back to take a 3-2 lead. Two walks put runners on first and second. Bases were then juiced after a hit by pitch. The first out of the inning was a forced popup with bases still loaded. A couple of Fisher errors pushed runs across for the Broncos.
Delhi scored another run in the top of the 3rd inning to take a 4-2 lead.
Both teams were quiet for a few innings, but Delhi threatened in the top of the sixth inning with a runner on third base.
In the bottom half of the sixth inning, the Falcons were able to knot the game a 4-4. Delhi got a runner on in the top of the 7th, but was unable to capitalize and score. Fisher stepped to the plate for their last regulation at-bat, but were quickly shut down as well.
With international ruling for softball, a runner was placed on second for the Broncos. A bunt moved runner Chade Mason over to 3rd base, but Fisher halted the scoring for the visitors. Kristina Brown was placed on second base for the Falcons. Collison moved her to 3rd with a sacrifice bunt. Zimmerman flew out to left field for a sacrifice fly scoring Brown for the 5-4 eight inning victory.
Zimmerman earned the victory in the circle allowing only three hits and striking out three.
Game 2
After a short break, the Falcons continued the momentum from the first game into the second game. The first three batters of the game for Delhi stepped to the plate and were quickly retired.
The Falcons jumped to an early 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Senior Morgan Selmi started off with a double to left field. Freshman Corrie Edstrom hit a ball back to the pitcher who made a throwing error scoring Selmi. Zimmerman singled to center advancing Brown to 3b who reached on a fielder's choice. Zimmerman moved over on the pitch to put two runners in scoring position. Collison then added a single scoring Brown and advancing Zimmerman. A wild pitch moved Collison to second and Zimmerman scored.
Delhi came back in the top of the 2nd inning scoring a run of their own, but the Falcons were up 3-1 heading into the bottom of the second. Maria Rivera started off the Falcons with a single to right field. Darien Lavino added another single putting runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs. Selmi popped up, but Edstrom double to right center scoring both Rivera and Lavino to take a 5-1 lead. Brown then doubled to left field scoring Edstrom for a 6-1 lead. Delhi made a pitching change and shut down the Falcons for the rest of the inning.
In the tope of the 3rd inning, the Falcons let go of their 6-1 lead and the Broncos took a 7-6 lead. Edstrom made a shoe-lace catch in center to end the inning leaving the bases loaded for Delhi.
Fisher came right back and scored three more runs on singles by Selmi and Edstrom in the 3rd to take a 9-7 lead over Delhi.
Delhi was blanked in the top of the 4th inning after a lead off double to center field. Rowley forced groudouts by the next three batters to shut down the Broncos.
Sophomore Luz Evangelista hit a single to left field that scored Zimmerman from 3rd base giving the Falcons a 10-7 lead.
Delhi threatened after lead off hitter was hit by a pitch and moved over on a sacrifice bunt. Another walk put runners on 1st and 2nd and they moved over on a wild pitch putting two runners in scoring position. Rowley sat down the next batter to end the threat.
Lavino stated the bottom half of the fifth inning with a single to shortstop and moved to third on a single by Selmi. Edstrom singled to right scoring Lavino and putting runners on the corners. Two quick outs held the Falcons on the corned, but Collison hit a shot to center field and advanced to third base on an error scoring both Edstrom and Selmi. Evangelista also singled scoring Collison to put the Falcons up 14-7.
Delhi added a run in the top of the 6th inning and threatened with another runner on 3rd base. The Falcons again shut down the threat and quickly got out of the jam.
The Broncos changed pitchers again throwing off the Falcon hitters going down 1-2-3 in the frame.
Delhi stepped to the plate for their final chance at redemtion. Back-to-back singles put runners on 1st and 2nd for the Broncos with no outs. A wild pitch put runners on 2nd and 3rd, but a routine ground ball to Brown got one out at 1st when Zimmerman threw back across the diamond to get the runner at 3rd for the second out. The Broncos pushed a run across during the bang-bang play to cut the lead to 14-9. Rowley got the last batter to strike out swinging ending the game.
Rowley earned her fourth win of the year in the circle, allowing 13 hits and striking out six.
Zimmerman and Edstrom led the way for the Falcons both going 4-for-7 on the afternoon. Evangelista added to the offense going 3-for-6. All starting Falcons had at least one hit in both games.
The Falcons will hit the road to take on College of Saint Joseph in Vermont Wednesday, April 12 at 3:00 p.m. The will then face SUNY Delhi again at Delhi on Friday and Saturday.
