Falcons drop pair to UMPI

PRESQUE ISLE, ME – The University of Maine at Presque Isle (21-9) continued their strong play and swept a doubleheader against Fisher College (14-18) on Saturday afternoon.  The first game would be a high scoring affair, with the Owls winning 12-10; the second game UMPI would take by a score of 8-4.

After the Falcons would get a two-run homerun in the first inning, the Owls would respond in a big way.  The home team would send 12 batters to the plate, collect 5 hits, and plate seven runs.  Ayana Walker (FR, Columbus, GA) would blast a two-run homerun to left during that outburst.

Fisher would respond in the third and take advantage of two defensive errors by the Owls to plate four runs.  The Owls would respond once again and add to their lead in the bottom half.  Brianna Losee (JR, Pittsfield, ME) would single to lead off the inning, steal second, and later score on a wild pitch.  After being issued a walk, Ariel Williams (FR, Frisco, TX) would advance around the bases and also score on a wild pitch, giving UMPI a three-run lead.

For the first time in the game the Falcons would claim the lead in the fourth.  Powered by Corrie Edstrom's (FR, Shrewsbury, MA) two-run homerun, Fisher would score four runs in the innings off of five hits.  The lead would be short-lived as the Owls would get a clutch two-out double from Williams, driving in two runs.  The Owls would add an insurance run on a wild pitch to make the score 12-10.

The Falcons wouldn't have many opportunities going forward.  They would have two on with one out in the sixth but would hit into a double play to end the threat.

Williams, Jordi Legassie (SO, Presque Isle, ME), Walker, Sara Packard (JR, St. Albans, ME), and Losee would all collect multi-hit games for the Owls, with Williams, Legassie, and Walker each collecting two RBI.  Packard would strike out ten batters and walk just two in seven innings of work.

In game two, UMPI would take the lead in the second.  After manufacturing their first run, Nicole Marucci (JR, Naples, ME) would line a triple into left field to score a second run.  Fisher would respond in the third, and after a double drove in their first run of the game, Becky Collison (JR, Saginaw, MI) would launch a homerun to left to give the Falcons a 3-2 lead.

UMPI would put pressure on their opponents again in the fourth.  After a walk to Losee, she would advance to third on Marucci's single.  Marucci would steal second and then advance to third as Losee would score on a wild pitch.  Ariel Williams would drive Marucci in with a single into left.  The Falcons would tie the game immediately in the top of the fifth, plating a run with consecutive hits.

Jackie Peers would lead off the Owls' fifth with a double and later score on a ground out.  They would then add three in the sixth, with Williams picking up an RBI with a double.  The insurance runs proved to be too much for the Falcons to overcome, as the Owls would take the 8-4 win.

Marucci would lead the offense with a three for three performance, scoring two runs and driving in one.  Williams and Legassie would each collect two hits.
