Boston, Mass.—The Fisher College softball team closed out their 2017 season at the A.I.I. Conference Tournament in Lawrenceville, Georgia against the Edward Waters College Tornados by a score of 6-4. For the first time under Coach Laramie, the Falcons ranked 3-out-of-4 teams to earn a playoff berth. Finishing the regular season 16-18 the Falcons earned the fourth seed and took on #5 Georgia Gwinnett College in the opening round losing 19-1. The team turned around and played a solid game against EWC in the elimination game eventually dropping the contest 6-4.
After opening the season 0-10 in Florida, the Falcons were back indoors for a few weeks before hitting a turf and taking on Rivier Univeristy. The two split the contest and the Falcons had their first win of the season. After taking two losses to Husson University on April 8, the Falcons' season took a wild turn. On April 9, the Falcons took two victories from the University of Maine at Farmington, the first female program at Fisher to defeat the Beavers.
After earning their two victories against UMF, the Falcons then earned 10 consecutive wins against SUNY- Delhi and the College of St. Joseph of Vermont. With majority of the season in the review mirror, the Falcons were holding a .500 record at 13-13. Dean College put a halt to the Falcons win streak as they won the first game of the double header 10-3, but the Falcons retaliated and won the second game to continue with a .500 record.
Fisher finished the regular season 16-18 which proved to be the most successful season in program history with a win percentage of .444. Not only that, but the Falcons tripled the amount of wins they had in the 2016 season.
Senior Morgan Selmi led the team offensively with a .472 batting average, 59 hits, 15 doubles, 2 triples, and 4 homeruns. Fellow senior Kristina Brown followed with a .453 batting average with 53 hits, 17 doubles, 2 triples, and 5 home runs. Brown also swiped three bases for an on base percentage of .485. Junior Mikayla Zimmerman finished the season with a .444 batting average with 48 hits, 12 doubles, 2 triples, and 1 homerun.
Newcomers Rebecca Collison, Corrie Edstrom, and Taylor Rowley also helped offensively, defensively, and in the circle. Rowley went out before the conclusion of the season due to an injury, but before the injury, she pitched 97.2 innings striking out 50 facing 599 batters. Zimmerman saw a lot of time in the circle facing 638 batters striking out 49 and pitching 114.1 innings.
The Falcons lose Morgan Selmi, Victoria Park, Camila Da Silva, and Kristina Brown to graduation, but Coach Laramie is working hard to fill their roster spots with incoming freshman and transfers.
