Falcon fend off Knights for victory

BOSTON –A pair of 2-point performances by Christine Briggs (Rumford, Maine) and Aliyanah McIntosh (Brooklyn, N.Y.) powered Fisher College to a 83-34 victory over Vermont Technical College in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday evening.

The Falcons started the game hot, jumping out to an early 10-2 lead through the first four minutes of play.

Just uner two minutes later the Knights stormed back, knotting the score at 10-10 on the back of a Mikaela Farmer jumper. Jillian Williams (Berlin, N.H.) scored the remainder of the Falcons points to take a 21-18 lead into the second quarter.

Both teams could not find an answer and struggled offensively in the second stanza, but the Knights were outscored by the Falcons 11-6. Fisher led 32-24 at the break.

Fisher regrouped at the half and played some inspired basketball during the third quarter outscoring the Knights 23-4 shooting 40.0 percent from the field.

However, a strong Falcon defensive effort stalled the Knights attack in the fourth quarter. Fisher cruised to victory hitting 28 points to Vermont Techs's six to close the game.

Briggs and Murphy Carroll led all scorers in the game, with Briggs securing a double-double with a game-high 29 rebounds.  McIntosh (Brooklyn, New York) and Murphy Carroll (Methuen, Mass.) also had active nights with 21 and 17 points respectively.

Katie Thygesen (11 points and nine boards) and Farmer (10 points and one board) led the Knights' attack.

On the game, Fisher led in rebounds (65 to VTC's 32), turnovers forced (22 to 20), and points in the paint (40-8).

With the victory, Fisher moves to 3-8 on the season. They will take a few days before taking on the University of Maine-Machias, January 15, at 5 p.m.
