Falcons Soar Over The Lyons For Their 16th Win

Norton, MA- The Women's Basketball team headed into the non-conference game tonight with the Wheaton Lyons coming off a tough 52-45 loss to the CSJ Saints on Tuesday evening. The loss was one of the Falcons worst shooting performances of the season, shooting just 21% from the floor. Tonight it was a different Falcons outcome in which they shot an impressive 43% from the floor and did not miss from the free throw line (16 of 16), defeating the Lyons 78-55.

The first quarter started with the Lyons grabbing an early 6-0 advantage on back-to-back three-pointers just a minute into the game. The Falcons quickly responded with the next six points, tying it at 6 just a minute later. That would be the last lead and tie in the game as the Falcons never looked back from there. Fisher would outscore Wheaton 15-7 over the last seven minutes of the quarter, shooting 62.5% in the first to take a 21-13 lead after one frame. The Falcons tried to extend the lead into the second, but the Lyons and Falcons would match baskets over the first five of the second quarter, keeping the lead to eight at 32-24. An 11-2 run over the next three minutes would give the Falcons some breathing room putting them up 43-26 after a Kellie Gaston (Tampa, FL) jump shot. Wheaton closed the half with a 5-2 run to bring the two teams to 45-31 heading into the locker room.

Fisher kept the pressure on in the third and fourth quarters, outscoring the Lyons 33-24 in the last two stanzas. The Falcons finished the fourth with another strong shooting percentage, hitting 8 of 19 shots, including two from downtown. Aside from the hot shooting, the Falcons were strong under the basket out-rebounding their opponent 51-26, while grabbing 18 offensive boards. Jenny-Lynn Eggers (Sonoma, CA) had her best day as a Falcon as she finished with her second double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Four other Falcons finished in double figures as Choon-Hee Chae (Kyle, TX) had 14, Gaston finished with 13, Jocelyn Mendoza (Morgan Hill, CA) had 11 and Vivian Lara (Norwalk, CA) contributed with 10. Shaniah Hazard (Providence, RI) had a strong game for her squad also, finishing with six points, seven rebounds, a pair of steals, while dishing out two. Wheaton was led offensively Natalie Wind who came off the bench to score 18 for the Lyons while grabbing a pair of rebounds in the losing effort.

The Falcons take their momentum into this weekend as they host the NIAC Championship, taking on the Green Mountain Eagles at 1pm. The game will be at the Winsor School in Boston and will also feature a Senior Day presentation at halftime for the teams two seniors; Jocelyn Mendoza and Daniela Villegas
