Lady Falcons Drop Season Opener to Pine Manor College

CHESTNUT HILL, MA -- For the second game in-a-row, Pine Manor sophomore Sybil Lynch (Hoboken, NJ) scored a pair of goals and senior Amanda Powell (Lumberton, NJ) scored the game-winner to help lead Pine Manor Women's Soccer to a 3-1 victory, this time over Fisher College, on Tuesday afternoon at Hedley Field in Chestnut Hill, MA.

The Gators were forced to rally from an early 1-0 deficit when Fisher's Alicia Alex (Pepperrell, MA) put the Falcons ahead just 2:49 into the game. Fisher sophomore Ashley De Sousa (Hazlet, NJ) delivered a through ball from the midfield to send Alex in alone on goal, allowing Alex the time and space to calmly deliver the first goal of the game and the first goal of the season for Fisher.

The Falcons held the lead for the next 20 minutes before Lynch was able to sneak the ball past Fisher goalkeeper Kourtney Kellard (Danvers, MA) and tie the match. Lynch broke into the Fisher penalty area after using a burst of speed to get free down the left flank, but was unable to find a lane to cross the ball to the middle of the field. Instead, Lynch found the far post, banking the ball in off the woodwork to tie the score at 1-1.

The Gators then took the lead just before the half when Powell used her own odd angle shot to beat Kellard, this time from the right side of the field. Carrying the ball from midfield, Powell got around the Fisher line and into the top corner of the penalty area before releasing a shot that beat Kellard to her short side to give the Gators the 2-1 advantage with 1:13 remaining in the first half.

With Pine Manor leading 2-1 after the half, the Falcons failed to equalize on a penalty kick nine minutes into the second half. A Pine Manor foul in the penalty area allowed Fisher's Deanna Morency (Auburn, ME) the opportunity to tie the match but her penalty kick shot sailed right into the arms of PMC goalkeeper Natasha Kopystynsky (Johnsburg, IL). Kopystynsky made 8 saves to record her second victory of the season for the Gators.

The second half remained scoreless until Lynch connected with a cross from Rachel Sanchez (Hyde Park, MA) and buried the ball in the back of the net to give PMC the 3-1 advantage at 76:49. The Gators kept the pressure on for the remaining 13 minutes of the game, outshooting the Falcons 5-2, but they were unable to beat Kellard for a fourth time. For Fisher, Kellard made 13 saves on the day.

The Gators will be back in action on Saturday at 1:00 PM when they hit the road for the first time this season to take on Becker College in Leicester, MA. Fisher will also return to action on Saturday when they travel to Longmeadow, MA to take on Bay Path.
