Lady Falcons sizzle on senior day

Medford, Massachusetts—The Fisher College Women's soccer team's senior class is closing out an already strong 2015 season on a high note.

The Falcons cruised to an 8-2 victory over the University of Maine Presque Isle (UMPI) in Saturday's "senior day" game.

The Falcon offense put the pressure on early and often with sophomore forward Julia Schojan (Rochester, New York) scoring on a corner kick from senior teammate Ashley De Sousa (Hazlet, New Jersey) 17 minutes in.

Just 15 seconds later Schojan netted her second goal of the contest to put the Falcons up 2-0.

UMPI had a few shots at redemption, peppering Fisher keeper Paige Ciavarro (Lynnfield, Massachusetts) with three shots in less than a minute. A deflection off the crossbar, wide shot, and a strong save by Ciavarro kept the Owls at bay.

Schojan continued to spearhead the offensive attack with 15 seconds remaining in the half, working an assist to freshman Mariah Teixeira (Berkley, Massachusetts). Schojan and freshman Amanda Santiago (Saugus, California) notched two more goals before the break to advance the Falcon lead to 5-0.

After halftime, the Owls chipped away at the Falcon lead, cutting the lead to 5-1 on a penalty kick for a foul in the box.

But the Falcons answered quickly on a Schojan-to-De Sousa play that found its home in the right side of the net. Six minutes later, the senior De Sousa scored her second goal of the game to push the Falcons ahead 7-1.

UMPI scored again in the game's 71st minute, but not long after freshman Madison O'Brien (Shrewsbury, Massachusetts) iced the game with the final goal.

With the victory, the Falcons advance to 10-4, while UMPI falls to 4-8-1.

Ciavarro worked five saves on the game, earning her 10th win in net on the season. With 30 goals down and two games remaining, Schojan is chasing her own career scoring total of 33.

The Falcons return to action Sunday, Oct. 18 when they travel to Chestnut Hill to take on the Gators of Pine Manor College at 1 p.m.
