Volleyball Opens with Loss to Curry

HENNIKER, N.H. – The Curry College women's volleyball team notched its first win of the 2017 season with a straight 3-0 (25-19, 25-14, 25-21) sweep of Fisher College at the New England College Tournament in Henniker, N.H. The Colonels improve to 1-0 while the Falcons drop to 0-1.

The first set was tight throughout as the squads traded the first 20 points. Curry was able to grab a three point lead at 14-11 after Cynthia Huerta (Salinas, Calif.) committed an error. Back-to-back kills by Nicole Rice (Woburn, Mass.) and Grace Stafford (West Yarmouth, Mass.) helped the Colonels pull to within one point of the opening set and then a service error by Periya Yath (Amherst, Mass.) gave Curry the opening set by a final score of 25-19.

The Colonels opened the second stanza by capturing six of the first seven points. A kill by Rice would double up Fisher in the set, 14-7. The kill would start a 5-2 run that sent the lead up to 10. Curry closed out the set strong and captured the second by a 25-14 final.

The final set was closer but it was still the Colonels to come out on top. The squads traded the first 38 points of the stanza. Curry closed the set on a 6-3 run to capture the final frame 25-21 and the match in straight sets.

On the offensive side of the ball Rice led the Colonels with 17 kills. Stafford posted a double-double by registering 10 kills and 11 digs. Monica Wilkes (Franklin Lakes, N.J.) paced Curry with 29 assists. Courtney Carroll (Fairhaven, Mass.) recorded a match-high 20 digs.

For Fisher, Huerta registered a team-high 10 kills. She added 13 digs for a double-double. Govanna Rosado (Humacao, Puerto Rico) paced the Falcons with 15 assists.
