Falcons Take Pair from Fighting Saints; 3-0, 3-0

Chestnut Hill, Mass. – The Fisher College Falcons took two matches from the Fighting Saints of Saint Joseph's 3-0, 3-0 Saturday afternoon at Pine Manor College. The Falcons improve to 7-6 on the season while the Fighting Saints drop to 11-10. 

Fisher took the first set by a score of 25-9.  The Falcons jumped out to an early 5-0 lead on multiple service aces.  The Fighting Saints fought back to cut Fisher's lead to 19-7 on a service error by Fisher.  The Falcons closed out the set with a kill by Cynthia Huerta.

 

The Falcons continued to dominate taking the first three set points on a kill and service ace by Natie Manalo and a kill by Huerta.  CSJ would tie the set 4-4, but a 12-4 Fisher run extended their lead to 16-8.  The Fighting Saints cut the lead to seven, 19-12, but Fisher managed to hold off CSJ after multiple unforced errors.  The Falcons took the second match 25-12.

The third set started with a service ace by Govanna Rosado, giving the Falcons a 1-0 set lead, but a service error on the next play tied the set 1-1.  CSJ went on a 9-0 run to tie the set 16-16, but fisher answered back with three points, 19-16.  Led by Huerta and Rosado, the Falcons closed out the set 25-20. 

Fisher was able to take match one 3-0 against the Fighting Saints.  Both teams took a short break before stepping on the court for a second match. 

During the second match Corrie Edstrom's kill quickly put the Falcons up 1-0 in the first set.  An attack error by Fisher and a CSJ kill knotted the set 2-2.  Fisher then took a quick 7-2 lead before going on a 7-0 run for a 14-4 lead.  Manalo recorded a kill and two service aces in a 5-point run for the Falcons.  Lia Ames closed out the set with a kill on a set from Rosado for a 25-13 set victory.

The second set got underway with Fisher taking a quick 2-0 lead.  A service error by Rosado and an attack error by Ames put CSJ on the board, 2-2.  An 8-point run for the Falcons gave them and 11-3 set lead over the Fighting Saints.  CSJ cut the Fisher lead to 15-12 on three attack errors and two kills. Huerta closed out the set with two services, but the Falcons 7-1 run closed out the set with a 25-16 victory.

In the final set College of Saint Joe's scored first with a service ace from Jordan Mixon.  Fisher then went on a 7-0 run to regain the lead, 7-1. The Falcons would go on small runs before CSJ would shut down the momentum, but back-to-back attack errors for the Falcons led to a set score of 23-12, Falcons lead.  Kills by Manalo and Edstrom secured the 25-12 victory for the Falcons.

 

Key players in the match for CSJ were Jordan Mixon (9 Kills, 15 Digs, 7 Assists, 5 Service Aces), Kali Drum (5 Kills, 18 Digs, 4 Assists, 1 Service Ace), and Timell Montgomery (4 Kills, 17 Digs, 3 Assists, 2 Service Aces).

 

For the Falcons, Huerta led the way with 23 Kills, 19 Digs, 3 Assists, and 5 Service Aces.  Ames (11 Kills, 16 Digs, 10 Service Aces) and Rosado (7 Kills, 9 Digs, 41 Assists, 6 Service Aces) also contributed offensively for the Falcons.

 

Fisher is off for a few days before traveling to Delhi, N.Y. Friday night to take on SUNY Delhi and Pratt Institute in a tri-match starting at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 21.
