Lady Falcons Sweep The Lynx Sunday Afternoon In A Volleyball Doubleheader

Boston, MA- The Women's Volleyball team came into Sunday's doubleheader looking to avenge the 3-1 loss earlier this season that came at the hands of the Lesley University Lynx (3-8). It looked like it was going to be a similar back and forth affair as it was when the two teams met earlier in September as the first game was a tight game (25-20), but the Falcons took control from then on and went on to sweep the Lynx at the Winsor School on Sunday afternoon, 3-0 and 3-0.

Match 1-

The first game of the first set was the closest of the afternoon as the two teams battled for control early on. The game was tied 12 different times throughout the first game with the last being at 19 points a piece. But the Falcons finished the game with a 6-1 run led by the strong service game of freshman Katherine Rodriguez (Fajardo, PR) who was at the line for the games last three points. Senior Cynthia Huerta (Salinas, CA) tallied a kill for the 25th point to take a 1-0 lead. Game two started similarly as it was a tight battle through the first 10 points with the Falcons maintaining just a 6-4 edge. The Falcons went on three 6-1 runs over the rest of the game though, taking control of the game for a 25-10 victory in game two. Lesley tried to fight their way back into the third game, as they took the lead late in the third game. But again the Falcons gained their composure and came away with a 25-18 set win to clinch the match, 3-0.

Huerta led the way for the Falcons with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Rodriguez had 22 assists and a team leading 13 digs in the victory. Junior Lia Aime (Las Piedras, PR) was effective at the service line, finishing with four service aces. Cassidy Wygonik contributed six kills and nine digs for the Lynx in the losing effort.

Match 2-

The Falcons picked up right where they left off in the second match, getting out to an early five point lead at 11-6. Lesley responded with a run of their own getting within two of the Falcons at 12-10. That would be the closest they would get though, as the Falcons ripped off six straight points with Rodriguez serving, capped by a Huerta kill to go up 20-11. Lesley would stop the bleeding with a kill from Allison Napoleon, but it would not be enough as FC would get another kill from Huerta to win 25-16 and take the 1-0 set lead. Again Lesley would not back down, and took their first lead of the match capped by a Wygonik kill, going up 12-8 over the Falcons. Fisher rallied right back and a pair of kills from Charisse Lazu (Trujillo Alto, PR) would force Lesley to use one of their timeouts with the game knotted at 12. The seesaw battle continued as Fisher came out of the time out earning the next three points, but again Lesley answered with their own three straight points to tie it 15-15. The two teams were tied again at 16 and 17, but the Falcons again finished strong and held on for the 25-22 win in game number two. That seemed to take the wind of the Lynx sails as they could not hang with the Falcons in the third game, and Fisher would cruise to a 25-9 win in the third and final set of the afternoon to claim the match victory.

Huerta had a monster second match, collecting 23 kills and 11 digs in the victory. Lazu was second on the squad with six kills and 10 digs, while Rodriguez contributed with 24 assists to give her 200 for the season. Aime added another four service aces in the victory. Wygonik finished with 11 kills for the Lynx, while Nicole Pietrocola led the way with 18 digs in the losing effort.

The Falcons return to the road when they head to Regis College on Tuesday. The action is slated for a 6pm start and live video of the match can be found here.
