Women's Volleyball Wins A Key Matchup Against Conference Rival

Boston, MA- The Women's Volleyball team got a key victory on Sunday when they played host to conference rival, Washington Adventist University. Both teams went into the matchup 0-0 in conference play so it would prove useful in the conference standings. The Falcons withstood a Shock comeback and captured the win in straight sets, 25-16, 26-24, and 25-22. With the win the Falcons improve to 8-12 while the Shock fall to 5-7. 

The Falcons came out in the first set looking to make a statement as they took an early 9-1 lead, forcing a Shock timeout. FC took the next five points out of the break, building their biggest lead of the match at 14-1. The Shock would not go quietly though, going on their own 8-2 run to make it a 16-9 first set. But the Falcons were able to close it out, led by four Cynthia Huerta (Salinas, CA) kills to earn the first set 25-16. 

The next two sets featured back and forth action throughout, making for a very exciting match. The second set was a seesaw battle as it saw numerous lead changes and six ties. The Falcons looked to pull ahead, building a 20-15 lead, but the Shock answered with five straight points to tie it at 20-20 forcing Coach Lau to call a timeout. The set was tied at 22 and with the Shock grabbing the next two points for set point at 24-22 the Falcons faced set point, but the Falcons resiliency shone through as they tallied the sets final four points to take the second set 26-24, again led by Huerta's three kills and a service ace from junior captain Lia Aime (Las Piedras, PR). 

WAU refused to lay down in the third, facing a 2-0 deficit as they got out to their biggest lead of the match at 16-8 in the third set, capped by three kills from Sarah Adalla. But again Fisher had the answer, collecting the sets next eight points to tie it at 16 a piece. The two teams exchanged leads again down the stretch as the set was tied at 17, 18, 19 and 22, but it was the Falcons who finished it out, earning the last three points of the match, capped by a Charisse Lazu (Trujillo Alto, PR) kill for the 25-22 victory.

Huerta led all players with 24 kills, 16 digs and four service aces, while Aime was great defensively earning 19 digs. Katherine Rodriguez (Fajardo, PR) was key in the passing game again, setting up 31 kills in the match. Adalla led the Shock with nine kills, while Kristal Salazar led her team with 17 digs in the losing effort.

FC Volleyball is back at it again when they head to New London, CT to take on Mitchell College who are 9-9 this season. The action is slated for Wednesday, October 16th at 7pm. Catch all the action live here.
