Weekly Preview - Falcons Baseball Takes On The Newbury Nighthawks Thursday Afternoon

Boston, MA- The Falcons baseball team will be looking to get back on track Thursday afternoon as they head to the New England Baseball Complex in Northboro, MA to take on the Newbury Nighthawks. After starting the season 13-0, the Falcons have lost four in a row, having been swept by the University of Rio Grande Red Storm over the weekend putting their current record at 13-4. The Nighthawks have one game under their belt having lost their only contest to the Anna Maria Amcats 13-3 this past Saturday. Fisher defeated the Amcats in their first game of the spring campaign 9-4 on February 16th.

The Falcons have hit well for the majority of the season. All of the regular starters with 40 AB's or more are currently batting .379 or above and have combined for 119 hits. Fisher has been led all season by junior first baseman Mitchell Lundholm (Plymouth, MA) who now leads his team in almost all offensive categories including hits (32), runs (22), RBI (24), batting average (.471), slugging percentage (.662) and doubles (8). He is also coming off a 4-hit performance in the extra innings loss to Rio Grande on Sunday. Freshman leadoff man Jorge Sanchez (Caguas, PR) has done a tremendous job in that role as he is second on the team in hits (22) and has a strong OBP of .471. He also leads the team in stolen bases as he has swiped 10 bags over his first 13 games.

Prior to the four-game skid, the pitching staff has stymied all their opponents and still hold a 2.87 ERA as a team. The Falcons are led by senior starter and captain Zach Leblanc (Salem, MA) who is 5-1 and has only given up eight earned runs in six starts and has collected 46 K's. Sophomore Norberto Ceballos (Loiza, PR) has also been a consistent and productive starter for his squad as he leads the team in ERA (1.04), holding his opponents to a .212 batting average while striking out 22. Senior Kevin Bongiovani (Bayside, NY) has seen time both as a starter and as a reliever, with success in both roles. In 12 innings pitched, he has allowed just three earned runs, has collected a save, and has struck out 12.

Fisher will look to put it all together against the 0-1 Nighthawks. In just the one game, Newbury saw three batters collect two or more hits; Brett Cabral, Brian Cipolla, and Dylan Presby.  Cipolla had a strong rookie campaign last season for the Nighthawks as he finished with 32 hits and a .302 average, good for third on the team. Senior outfield David Center has 105 hits in his career thus far, and is batting just under .300 for his career. Newbury has eight pitchers on the staff and will look to keep the Fisher batters in check. Last year's NC staff had a combined team ERA of 7.28.

The two teams will square off Thursday afternoon at 3:30pm. The game can be followed via live stats here.
