Falcons Fall Short In The Series Finale With The Patriots

Williamsburg, KY- On Wednesday afternoon the Falcons faced the University of the Cumberlands Patriots (17-3) for the third time in two days, this time on the Patriots home field, at Doyle Buhl Stadium. The Falcons knocked off the #11 ranked Patriots 8-3 in the nightcap on Tuesday afternoon and were hoping to complete the series with a win. The two teams were scoreless through the first three innings, but UC went up 6-0 after six innings and the Falcons could not recover, falling in the series finale 11-4.

Zach Leblanc (Salem, MA) started on the mound for the Falcons and pitched well for the first three innings, holding the home team to just four hits and keeping the Patriots off the board. Patriots starter Adrian Comas was just as effective through the first three innings, allowing just four hits and no runs as well.  The Patriots were able to get to Leblanc in the fourth though, as they collected four runs off four hits and a costly error by the Falcons defense to take a 4-0 lead after four complete. The home team tacked on a run in the 5th and the 6th innings using three hits and three walks to generate the offense taking a 6-0 lead into the top of the 7th. The Falcons bats got hot in the seventh as they finally got to Comas, tagging him for four runs forcing the Patriots to go to their bullpen. Cameron Pearson (Orlando, FL) and Braxten Ramirez (Amarillo, TX) started the inning with back-to-back singles. With one out, Jacob Deziel (Merrimac, MA) added a single of his own to load the bases for Jorge Sanchez (Caguas, PR) who earned an RBI as he was walked to force home Pearson for the Falcons first run. Ivan Rivera (Brooklyn, NY) made it 6-2 after he hit a sharp grounder to second allowing Ramirez to score collecting his 5th RBI of the season. Patriots reliever Hampton Clark entered the game with two inherited runners and the Falcons immediately took advantage, as Deziel scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead in half. Mitchell Lundholm (Plymouth, MA) then had an RBI single scoring Sanchez to make it 6-4, but Clark was able to stop the bleeding forcing a fly out for the final out of the 7th. That would be the closest the Falcons would get though, as the Patriots added five more runs over the last two innings to hold on for the 11-4 victory.

Mitchell Lundholm led the way for the Falcons in the loss, going 3 for 4 at the plate with an RBI. This is the sixth time this season that Lundholm has collected three or more hits in a contest, and is currently riding a 4-game hit streak while batting .457 this season. Sanchez, Pearson and Ramirez also had a pair of hits each in the losing effort, with Sanchez hitting safely in his last eight games. Zach Leblanc took the loss for the Falcons, giving up nine hits and four earned runs is now 5-2 on the year.  The Patriots offense was productive in the win as they tallied 14 hits with Orley Arellano leading the way with a 3 for 4 performance while adding a pair of runs and an RBI for his squad. Adrian Comas earned the win for UC scattering nine hits while giving up three earned runs.

The Falcons will have the day off to travel and will head to the University of Northwestern Ohio to take on the Racers on Friday and Saturday afternoon with the action starting at noon on both days.
