Fisher College Baseball To Host The Roberto Clemente Cup This Weekend
Fisher College is proud to be involved with the Roberto Clemente Cup, March 23 and 24 at Fraser Field in Lynn, MA. The two-day tournament, happening for the first time in Massachusetts, is a collaboration between Fisher College, three other regional schools, The Roberto Clemente Foundation, The Boston Red Sox Foundation and the Boston Athletic Academy.

The tournament is held in honor of baseball great and humanitarian Roberto Clemente. Clemente's activism touched many lives within the community, and The Clemente Cup hopes to carry on his legacy. This year Fisher College, State University of New York-Canton, University of Maine-Presque Isle, and Northern Vermont University-Lyndon are invited to play in the tournament. "This is an amazing partnership of strong organizations," says Fisher Baseball Head Coach Scott Dulin. "Bringing the tournament to Massachusetts and having the support of so many in the community really drives home the importance of the work Roberto Clemente did."

Festivities kick off Friday, March 22 at 3:00pm when Fisher College Athletics team up with The Red Sox Foundation to host a free Play Ball clinic for youth ages 5-12 at Fraser Field. The Play Ball clinic, free and open to the public, provides an opportunity to learn about baseball from college players and professionals. Throughout the weekend there will be an opportunity to donate gently used baseball and softball equipment as part of the Marines Toys for Tots program. Donations will be accepted beginning Friday at 3pm during the Play Ball clinic through the end of the tournament on Sunday – all happening at Fraser Field in Lynn, MA.

The Legend of '21'
Born in the San Antón neighborhood of Carolina, Puerto Rico, Roberto Clemente was one of the greatest baseball players in the US Major Leagues, recording 3,000 hits and being the first Latin American player to enter the Baseball Hall of Fame. Clemente won two World Series with the Pittsburgh Pirates and was considered one of the best right fielders in history, an opinion solidified by the twelve Gold Gloves awarded during his career.

For the people of Puerto Rico, he is one of the ultimate symbols of national pride, not just for the records he set but for the lives he touched with his activism and with the simple power of watching someone from the community achieve excellence without compromising their character. Sadly, it was due to this interest in others that caused his death by plane crash - carrying a cargo of aid for the victims of the 1972 Managua Earthquake. In his name the Roberto Clemente Prize is awarded in recognition of those who perform community work. For more information please visit www.robertoclementefoundation.com.
