NAIA Champions of Character

The vision of National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Champions of Character program is to change the culture of sport. Its mission is to provide training to instill the values that build character so students, coaches and parents know, do and value the right thing on and off the field. Research shows that the longer a student spends in sports, their social reasoning – sacrificing for the good of the team – rises.

Students learn to understand how the values play out in both practice and competition. Coaches are taught how to intentionally define, model, shape and reinforce the values through their coaching and mentoring. Parents learn how their behavior is key to supporting their athletes. For more than a decade, Champions of Character has been making a difference in developing athletes, coaches and parents of character.

The Champions of Character program helps participants find the balance by keeping five core values – integrityrespectresponsibilitysportsmanship, and servant leadership – at the heart of the athletics experience.

INTEGRITY is the positive internal traits that guide behavior. If you have integrity on the inside you'll make good choices on the outside. It’s what you do when no one else is looking.

The golden rule - RESPECT is treating others the way you would want to be treated. You can't build a good relationship or good team without respect.

RESPONSIBILITY is the social force that binds me to the team. Remember you are part of many teams who are counting on you so it's important for you to do your duty to the team.

SPORTSMANSHIP is following the rules, spirit and etiquette of the competition or event. We can demonstrate good sportsmanship in many ways inside and outside of sports.

SERVANT-LEADERSHIP is serving the greater good. It is helping others and doing the best you can for your family, class, school or team.

2018-2019 Champions of Charity Award Recipient

Champions of Charity is an organization that helps to build unity amongst athletic teams through community service. The organization's vision is to create an environment where giving back to the community is an integral part of student development. The Helper Helper mobile application tracks volunteer hours for all students at an institution. The organization has partnered with the NAIA for the next two academic years and an integral part of the partnership is a service competition amongst NAIA schools. Each school that participated logged their hours using the Helper Helper app between February 1 and April 1.

Many Fisher student-athletes participated over the two-month stretch under the direction of Meghan Case, a women's basketball player and President of the Association of Student-Athletes (ASA). Case oversaw the organization of the teams use of the Helper Helper app, and the community service events they participated in throughout the spring. She was rewarded with the honor of accepting the award on Fisher's behalf.

Many of the Falcons volunteered for the Clemente Cup in March which was a weekend-long baseball tournament that attracted many fans, alums and recruits to Fraser Field in Lynn, MA. Others earned hours working with the Cradles to Crayons organization. "I'm very proud of Fisher College student-athletes for winning the Champions of Charity Award. We do so much community service and engagement on our campus, I'm glad we are getting recognized for the hard work we put in throughout the year," said Case of her fellow student-athletes.

Boston, MA- On September 15th, 2018 the Fisher College Athletic teams joined in on the fun and attended the 3rd annual Boston Social Fitness Festival. The day was a fun filled packed day that encouraged people of all ages within the community of Boston to move, cycle, play and dance together! Our student athletes joined together in Downtown Boston, to help with tabling, passing out t-shirts and participating in games and dancing! This opportunity meant a great deal to the Fisher College students because it was a great way for our students to give back and join in on some local community fun. The Boston Social Fitness Festival was initially created in partnership with the Mayor's Office to enhance bike travel and fitness within the city. What initially started over a decade ago as a cycling festival to promote the growth in use of bikes in the city is now in its third year as larger fitness festival to get those in the city and the commonwealth up and moving.

Fisher Student woke up bright and early on the 15th and volunteered their time to ensure that health and fitness was the activity of the day. “In addition to simply enjoying and participating in the various fitness events, our student-athletes had the opportunity to serve as role models to the younger children for a day by exemplifying the benefits of fitness and physical activity." - Jesse Ford (Women’s Basketball Head Coach) Fisher Athletes worked to check in participants and run some of the fun games and activities going on throughout the day. After a day of hard work, and a bit of dancing, our athletes are geared up for what next years festival will bring.
