Falcons Take Pair from Raiders

Lynn, Mass. – Fisher College baseball faced off Rivier University in their annual fall ball games on Sunday, September 25.  The Falcons no-hit the Raiders in both games earning 5-2 and 4-0 victories at Fraser Field.

 

Game 1 5-2

 

In the first game of the day, the Raiders took a quick 2-0 lead over the Falcons in the first inning.  Raymundo Gomez got two quick outs, but an error led to a wild few batters.  Jacob Rayner from Rivier forced Jacob Sharpe to make an error at second base putting a runner on first with two outs. 

 

Gomez then fell into a slump walking the next two batters to load the bases.  Jorge Martinez stepped into the box for the Raiders and was hit by a pitch, which walked in a run to give Rivier a 1-0 lead.  The next batter was also walked, walking in another run to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.  Gomez regrouped after a mound visit and struck out the next batter to end the top half of the first inning.

 

Cody Mercier led off the bottom half of the inning for the Falcons sending a shot to right center field for a single.  Kyle Anulao then singled through the right side with Mercier scoring from first to cut the Raiders' lead to 2-1.  Anulao was stranded on third base after moving over to second on a bunt and stealing third, but the Falcons were unable to push him across.

 

The Falcons busted opening the scoring getting three runs on three hits.  Mercier walked for Fisher putting a runner on first with one out.  Anulao singled to right center putting runners on the corners for the Falcons.  Sam Schroeder then stepped to the plate and grounded out to shortstop, but advanced Anulao to second and scored Mercier to tie the game 2-2.  Angel Perez Vargas singled to right field scoring Anulao from second giving the Falcons a 3-2 lead.  Vargas then stole second to put him in scoring position.  Luis Torres doubled to left field pushing another Falcon run across the board to take a 4-2 lead.

 

Fisher added an insurance run in the fifth inning on a Torres single to left field scoring Schroeder from second who reached by getting hit by a pitch.  The game quickly ended with the Falcons coming out on top 5-2 over the Raiders.

 

Rivier struggled offensively against Gomez who was later relieved by Matthew Trotta to complete a 7 inning no-hitter.  Gomez took the win on the mound pitching 4 innings with 4 strikeouts and giving up 2 runs while Trotta pitched 3 innings with 2 strikeouts and no runs given up.

 

Game 2 4-0

 

Both teams came out of the break slow with no runs being scored until the third inning of the game.  George Gali singled to third base and advanced to second on a pass ball.  Mercier moved Gali to third with a groundout to second base.  Gali then scored on a wild pitch. 

 

Anulao reached first on an error and then advanced to third on a Schroeder single to right field.  Vargas followed with a single, Schroeder advanced to third and Anulao scored to take a 2-0 lead.  Vargas stole second to put two runners in scoring positon.  Torres then grounded out to the pitcher, but moved Vargas to third and Schroeder scored to take a 3-0 lead over the Raiders.

The Falcons added one more run in the fifth inning to go up 4-0 over Rivier and secure their second victory of the day. 

 

Schroeder went 1-for-2 on the day getting hit by a pitch in both games.  Mercier went 3-for-5 and Vargas went 2-4 leading the Falcons to their two victories.

 

Four Falcon pitchers combined for a seven inning no-hitter as well as nine strikeouts. 

 

Fisher College will return to fall action on Sunday, October 2 at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Mass. when they travel to take on Curry College.
