Baseball: Falcons split twin-bill at Mitchell College

NEW LONDON, CONN. – The Fisher College Baseball team earned a double-header split this afternoon at Mitchell College as they fell in game one 10-3 before holding on for a 6-5 win in the nightcap. The splits moves the Falcons' overall record to 15-3 on the season while the Mariners slide to 6-3.

Game One: Mitchell College 10, Fisher College 3 (Final)

The seven-game winning streak came to an end in the opener this afternoon as the Falcons fell for the third time this season, 10-3 to Mitchell.

The Mariners got to Fisher freshman starter William Carpenter (Brentwood, N.H.), who allowed a season-high nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits and allowed two home runs over his 3.2 innings of work. Sophomore Angel Rivera (Caguas, Puerto Rico) then worked the final 2.1 innings surrendering just one run (earned) on one hit and striking out three.

Junior Nicholas Lucchese (Long Island, N.Y.) went 2-for-4 with a RBI triple to right-center to pace the offense. Senior Mitchell Lundholm (Plymouth, Mass.) also collected a RBI on his 2-for-4 afternoon and junior Victor Torres (Rochester, N.Y.) added a RBI base hit as he finished 1-for-3.

Mitchell was powered by junior Dougie DelaCruz (Uncasville, Conn.), who belted a two-run homer in the fourth as he finished 2-for-4 with four RBI. Sophomore Lelo Martinez (New London, Conn.) also smacked one over the fence as he ended the opener going 1-for-2 with two RBI and senior Michael Santiago (Wethersfield, Conn.) collected two RBI on his 1-for-3 showing.

Senior Roland Thivierge (Portland, Conn.) picked up the win as the right-hander tossed six innings giving up three runs (two earned) on seven hits and striking out eight. Sophomore Kenny Heon (Montville, Conn.) struck out one and surrendered a base hit in his only inning of work.

Game Two: Fisher College 6, Mitchell College 5 (Final)

Sophomore John Batista (Lawrence, Mass.) recorded his second home run of the season as the Falcons battled back and held on to win game two this afternoon, 6-5.

Batista hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning to give Fisher a 5-2 lead. However, it's a was RBI groundout off the bat of senior Jonathan Rosado (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) that ended up being the game-winner in the top of the seventh. The Mariners launched a three-run homer of their own in the bottom of the seventh but sophomore Angel Alicea (Caguas, Puerto Rico) was able to slam the door shut for his first save of the season to preserve the win.

Senior Jose Galan (Alta, Puerto Rico) picked up his second win of the week as he pitched 3.1 innings of relief. The veteran left-hander gave up three runs (all earned) on two hits and struck out seven. Junior Norberto Ceballos (Loiza, Puerto Rico) got the start as the opener and allowed one run (earned) in one inning of work while striking out two. Senior Johann Doerrer (Dolgeville, N.Y.) then tossed two frames surrendering a run (earned) on three hits. Alicea picked up the save by retiring the only two hitters he faced.

Sophomore Reynaldo Vega (Aguada, Puerto Rico) went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to set the table for the Fisher offense. Lundholm and Rosado each finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and Batista ended his night 1-for-3 with that three-run homer. Freshman Ivanuel Hernandez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) was the other Falcon to record a hit as he went 1-for-2.

Mitchell senior Jeremy Santos (New London, Conn.) had the big blast in the seventh as he went 2-for-4 with three RBI to pace the Mariner six-hit attack. DelaCruz also collected a pair of hits in his 2-for-4 showing with a RBI and senior Anthony Laureano (Emerson, N.J.) added a pinch-hit single in the loss. Senior Jakari Pellegrini (New Britain, Conn.) fell to 2-2 on the season as the left-hander gave up three runs (all earned) on five hits over his 4.2 innings of work.

The Falcons will return home for their next scheduled contests as they get set to host Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch of the double-header from Fraser Field in slated for 3pm. Mitchell will also be in action on Wednesday as they host Albertus Magnus College in a 2pm twin-bill.
