BOSTON, MASS. – The Fisher College Department of Athletics is excited to announce that former major league pitcher and Boston native, Manny Delcarmen as an Assistant Baseball Coach for the Fisher College Baseball program.

"I am honored and excited to join the Fisher Baseball family." exclaimed an excited Delcarmen. "I would like to thank [Fisher College] President Steve Rich and [Head Baseball] Coach Scott Dulin for giving me this opportunity to coach at the collegiate level, especially at a place that's special to my family and friends."

Delcarmen was a second round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 2000 Major League Baseball draft, becoming the first draft pick from a Boston public high school in 34 years. He made his major league debut on July 26, 2005 against Tampa Bay and picked up his first major league win in 2006 after tossing two innings in relief against the Texas Rangers. Delcarmen became an important fixture in the bullpen for the Red Sox during their 2007 World Series championship. The right-hander pitched a total of 44 innings during the regular season to the tune of a 2.05 ERA and pitching a 4.1 innings during the playoffs. Overall, he spent parts of six seasons with the Red Sox making 289 appearances, an 11-6 record with three saves, a 3.89 ERA and 243 strikeouts over 284.1 innings pitched.

"It is great to have another Delcarmen." said Fisher College Athletic Director and Head Baseball Coach Scott Dulin. "Manny comes from a great family baseball background. More importantly, Manny is a World Series winner and knows what it takes to be successful in this game at the highest levels. I am happy to officially make him a part of Fisher Baseball."

After his stint in Boston came to a close, Delcarmen bounced around between six different organizations and then spent time playing in the independent leagues before officially retiring from professional baseball. Following his long professional career, Delcarmen became an analyst for NESN (New England Sports Network) covering the Red Sox and he started The Boston Athletic Academy (BAA).

The mission of the BAA is to educate and train underprivileged student-athletes in an environment that recognizes their culture, language, customs, and most importantly their growth potential as individuals. The BAA offers a membership and mentoring program, offering student-athletes of all ages afterschool training in the sport of their choice, combined with intestine academic tutoring – both content and skill based – at the appropriate grade level. The Boston Athletic Academy is based in Boston and was founded by Delcarmen and former Fisher College baseball student-athlete Jose Diaz. Diaz played one season (2008; 44 games, .321 AVG, 2 HR, 36 RBI) with the Falcons before becoming an assistant coach with Dulin for six seasons.

The connection with Fisher College and the baseball program runs deep within the Delcarmen family. Delcarmen's younger brother, Eddy, was a standout student-athlete for the Falcons for two seasons from 2008-2009. The younger Delcarmen played in 95 career games for Fisher compiling a .316 batting average with eight home runs and 64 RBIs on 90 career hits. The sure-handed second baseman committed just 10 errors in his career wearing the blue-and-white and was inducted into the Fisher College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2015.

"My brother Eddy and best friend Jose also attended Fisher." Delcarmen continued. "Both played baseball. So when they heard that I was interested in becoming an assistant coach at Fisher, they were really happy for me and excited for me."

Work begins immediately for the Fisher Baseball program, fresh off a 31-22 season with an appearance in the NAIA Opening Round. Fall practices are underway at Fraser Field in Lynn, Massachusetts. The program is celebrating its 21st season in 2022 and has an overall record of 535-405-2 with seven conference championships, six appearances in the NAIA post-season along with numerous student-athletes continuing their careers in professional baseball.

"Obviously I didn't get to play college baseball." Delcarmen talked about on becoming a college baseball coach. "Through all the adversity, speed bumps, ups and downs, surgeries, call it what you want. I've been through it all. But I never changed my focus on what I wanted to do. That was becoming a major league pitcher. So with this group of guys I get to work with, I will really work on their mechanics, strength and all that good baseball stuff. But really have them work on mental strength. This game is not easy. But having this group of guys mentally sound will be a big part of this team's success."
