LYNN, MASS. – The Fisher College Baseball team picked up an important two wins today as they defeated both the University of Maine-Presque Isle and Vermont State University – Lyndon in a fun-filled day at Fraser Field. The Falcons are now .500 on the season at 11-11 while the Owls, who took down Lyndon 6-5 in extra innings during the middle game of the day, slide to 4-4 (1-0 North Atlantic Conference) and the Hornets fall to 2-8 (0-1 NAC).
Game One: Fisher College 11, Maine-Presque Isle 0 (Final/7-inn.)
Senior Vance Serrano (Las Vegas, Nev.) tossed six scoreless innings and junior Yariel Salinas (San Juan, Puerto Rico) smashed a home run over the centerfield batter's eye as the Falcons returned to the win column with an 11-0 mercy shortened victory over the University of Maine-Presque Isle this afternoon.
Serrano was dominate on the mound as he limited the Owls to just three hits over the six frames while striking out 10. Freshman Armando Morillo (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) pitched a clean 7th inning to account for the pitching in game one.
Offensively the Falcons scored five times in the first inning and never looked back. Salinas belted his team-leading 6th homer of the season with a solo blast that landed against the wall of the football locker rooms at Manning Field. Salinas finished the afternoon going 2-for-3. Senior Michael Wright (Winnipeg, Manitoba) collected a pair of RBIs and junior Armando Torres (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Maine-Presque saw juniors Garrett Chadwick (Brighton, Colo.), Ricky Garcia (Middleburg, Maine), and sophomore Hector Perez (Georgetown, Texas) register base hits in the contest. Freshman right-hander Danielle Moser (Hamilton, N.J.) allowed nine runs (seven earned) over four innings of work in her first career appearance on the hill.
Game Two: Fisher College 5, Vermont-Lyndon 2 (Final)
A three-hit, three-RBI night from sophomore Jatnier Torres (Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico) guided the Falcons to a night-cap victory over Vermont State-Lyndon, 5-2.
The right-handed hitting third baseman laced a one-out double just inside the third base bag plating two runs in the third to give Fisher a 4-0 lead. Torres then added a RBI single in the fifth inning which capped the scoring for the Falcons. Junior Gilbert Gomez (Santo Domingo, D.R.) knocked in the game's first run with a triple in the first.
Junior Maylo Sierra picked up his first win of the campaign with six solid innings on the mound. The veteran right-hander struck out eight and allowed just one unearned run while scattering five hits. Classmate Emmanuel Grullon (Santiago, D.R.) recorded his first save with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.
