Men's Soccer Earns A Win In Season Home Opener Against The Owls

Medford, MA- The Men's Soccer team bounced back Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 win over the University of Maine-Presque Isle Owls (1-1). Having started out the season winning two straight, the Falcons lost back-to-back contests this week so were eager to end the streak. The Falcons received goals from Leonardo Mildor (Pompano Beach, FL), Pedro Wagner (Porto Alegre, Brazil) and Andree Molina (El Paso, TX) to do just that, bringing their overall record to 3-2.

Both teams could not get their offensive strides going in the first 30 minutes of play as each team combined for just three shots on goal, but the Falcons turned it up a notch on the downstretch before halftime, scoring twice before the break. It was Mildor's goal, who scored on a deflected save from Owls keeper Nathan Barnett from a Wagner blasted shot, that put the Falcons ahead 1-0 in the 33rd minute, giving him his third of the season. The Falcons made it a 2-0 lead just minutes later when Ryan McCassie (Waltham, MA) earned his first point of the season, making a crisp pass to Wagner who put it in the back of the net to give his team a two-goal advantage with seven minutes left to play before the break. The Falcons tried to make it three goals before the half, but Owls keeper Keith Mank who came in for the injured Barnett, denied Devin Furphy (Cortland Manor, NY) and the teams would head to the locker room with the Falcons up two.

UMPI came out strong out of the break testing Fisher's keeper right away on shots from Chad Bartlett and Stephen Cochrane, but Christopher Garcia (Rowland Heights, CA) maintained his teams lead, coming up with two strong saves. Fisher came right back though, and in the 59th minute took a 3-0 lead when Molina finished his own first missed shot to beat Mank for his third goal of the season. The Owls could not find the back of the net until a foul in the box in the 88th minute gave the visitors a penalty shot. Garcia was able to get a hand on the Andre Rossignol shot, but it was not enough, making it a 3-1 game. The Owls kept the pressure on, earning a corner kick before the whistle, but the Falcons held on for the 3-1 victory.

Garcia earned his third win of the season, making five saves in the win. Barnett and Mank combined for eight saves in the losing effort.

The Falcons are back to work this Wednesday when they play host to the University of Saint Joseph's (CT) with the game slated for a 5:30pm start at Hormel Stadium.
