Swansea, Mass. -- The Fisher College softball team took a morning trip to the NESU Fall Tournament on Sunday, October 2. The team took two victories from Massasoit Community College (MCC) as well as Northern Essex Community College (NECCO) by the scores of 11-6 and 28-7 respectively.
Game 1 vs. Massasoit Community College 11-6
Fisher College earned the home team flip and took the field for the start of the game. MCC started off the inning with an 0-2 count single to put a runner on first. A pass ball moved the runner to second, but the batter was deamed out for bunting on the third strike; runner on second, 1 out. The third batter walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd, but bases became loaded when freshman pitcher Taylor Rowley hit the next batter. Rowley then got the next batter looking and the last batter to ground out to 2nd base.
Morgan Selmi led the bottom half of the 1st with a line drive to the pitcher follow. Kristina Brown then hit a double to put a runner in scoring position with two outs. Mikayla Zimmerman walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd. Becky Collison then doubled to bring both runs in, but was stranded at 2nd when Rowley fouled out to the catcher.
Massasoit rebuttled and scored 5 runs in the top of the 2nd inning from a few walks as well as a couple of hits to take a 5-2 lead over the Falcons. An outstand play from Tori Park in right field to Corrie Edstrom at 2nd to Brown at 3rd ended the inning for the Falcons.
The Falcons came back and scored 10 runs in the bottom half of the second inning. Edstrom led of the inning with a pop-up to the pitcher, but her teammates picked her up with Maria Rivera leading off with a single, followed by a Hannah Malone homerun. Selmi redeemed herself and got on base and moved over when Park walked. Brown, Zimmerman, and Collison all reached and scored to put the Falcons up 7-5 with just 1 out. Rowley flew out to the centerfielder, but Edstrom and Rivera both reached base as well as scored before Malone was thrown out at 3rd for trying to get extra bases.
Rowley started the inning off with a strikeout, but had a little trouble with the next three batters. One MCC run crossed the plate before Rowley took matters into her own hands and struck out the next two.
With the rules of the tournament being drop dead at 1:40, the game was called just after 2 1/2 innings, but the Falcons took the victory 11-6.
Game 2 vs. Northern Essex Community College 28-7
The Falcons were coming off of a hot game and were dealt the card of visitor for their second game. Selmi led off the inning with a single, but was out at second with a fielders' choice hit by Park. Brown and Zimmerman both grounded out to the left side of the infield to head to the bottom half of the inning.
NECCO took a quick 3-0 lead with a few walks and hit by pitches. The Falcons managed to get their first out of the inning with a runner off 3rd base, the catcher threw down to second and Selmi picked her off at third. Rowley racked up another strikeout and Edstrom fielded the last out at 2nd.
Fisher then busted open the scoring 9 runs in the top of the 2nd inning including a homerun from Brown. NECCO got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning, to bring the score to 9-5 in Fishers' favor. The top half of the 3rd inning was what blew the game open for the Falcons. Brown led off with a single with one out to start the run. Rivera several batters later singled to push runners across to make the score 12-5 with bases loaded. Malone then singled to push another run across making the score 13-5. Selmi then doubled clearing the bases making it 16-5 before Brown stepped to the plate and cranked another homerun to give the Falcons a 18-5 lead.
The Knights were able to bring one more run across, however it wasn't enough to make a dent in the gap 18-7. The Falcons tacked on 10 more runs in the 4th inning to take their 28-7 lead over NECCO.
The game was called again due to the drop dead 1:40 rule with the Falcons sealing the deal at 28-7.
