Falcons Fall to Scots 60-48

WENHAM, MA Four different Fighting Scots scored in double figures as the Gordon women's basketball squad notched its first win of the 2014-15 season over non-conference foe Fisher College, 60-48. Freshman Kristen Smith (Littleton, MA) had the first double-double of her career with 11 points and 11 boards to lead the Scots, while Fisher's Murphy Carroll (Methuen, MA) led all scorers with 20 points on the evening.

The Fighting Scots never trailed in the contest, taking an early 4-0 lead on good jumpers by Smith and Brooke Kratche (Chagrin Falls, OH) in the opening minute. Alecxis Akridge (Union, NJ) would get a basket back for the Falcons, but Gordon then went on a 7-0 run over the next four minutes to put themselves on top by nine. Gordon and Fisher traded baskets back and forth for the next seven minutes until Kratche converted on back-to-back fast-break layups to give the Scots a 19-7 lead.

Gordon would lead by as many as 17 in the first period when Sophie Linnell (Richmond, VA) made a free throw to put the Scots up 30-13 with two minutes to play in the period. Murphy Carroll cut the Fighting Scots lead to 30-15 at the halftime break with an opener jumper with 1:48 remaining in the half. The Fighting Scots had equal distribution of points in the first half with Kratche leading the way with nine. Mariel Barner (Colorado Springs, CO) and Smith had eight points and seven points, respectively, in the first half.

Fisher played the second half with a new energy, as twins Murphy and Madison Carroll led the Falcons back within five points of Gordon with less than seven minutes to play. After a quiet first half, Murphy Carroll lit up the Gordon defense with a mix of long- and mid-range jumpers. She also finished with five rebounds in the game.

Despite a 22-12 run to start the half, Gordon never panicked in the late stages. Each time the Falcons looked to break through the two-possession lead, Gordon would make a stop on the defensive end. The Fighting Scots matched the intensity on the other end, scoring 18 points over the final six minutes and change to pull away late.

While Murphy led all scorers with 20 points, Madison Carroll chipped in nine points and 12 rebounds before fouling out in the final minute. Madison Carroll also led the Falcons with two assists.

Gordon's spread attack worked wonders for the Scots in their home opener. Kratche and Olivia Vetere (Mahopac, NY) led Gordon with 14 points apiece—Vetere had a sharp day from the charity stripe at 7-for-8. Barner returned after missing the season opener and paced Gordon's offense with 12 points, six rebounds and a team-high five assists. Linnell nearly matched her classmate, Smith, with 10 rebounds.

The Falcons will head across the Boston Commons on Wednesday to take on Emerson College in the Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gymnasium at 7:00 pm.
