Women's Basketball Downed by UMPI 64-56

Boston, MA – Fisher College women's basketball couldn't hold on in the second half Sunday afternoon and fell to University of Maine-Presque Isle (UMPI) by a score of 64-56. Fisher falls to 1-7 on the season while UMPI improves to 2-2. 

The Owls took the lead at the start, but the Falcons' Christine Briggs (Rumford, ME) drove for a layup and tied the game, 2-2. Camila Da Silva (Everett, MA) put the Falcons up 4-2 with a layup assisted by Briggs when UMPI turned the ball over. 

UMPI took back the lead (7-6) with 16:12 left to play when Darby Toth made a layup. The Owls then took a five-point lead before Alexis Akridge (Union, NJ) was fouled and hit both shots. After Akridge's free throws, the Falcons went on an eight-point run, putting them up 16-11.

The Falcons kept the lead for the rest of the first half. Heading into halftime, the Falcons led 31-23.

First-half leaders for the Falcons were Murphy Carroll with 12 points, and Briggs and Akridge with six points apiece. Briggs led the team at the half with seven rebounds with Akridge right behind with six. Shakieya Roland-Drake (Boston, MA) was another key player in the first half, scoring five points and recording two boards.

The Owls leader was Darby Toth who had 10 points while grabbing three boards. Other key Owls were Sara Packard (six points, two rebounds) and Rebecca Campbell (five points, six rebounds).

After the break, the Owls came out strong and dominated the Falcons in the second half. UMPI pushed for a 41-point half while Fisher only managed 25 points. UMPI opened the second half with a seven-point run before Da Silva could redeem the Falcons. The Falcons remained in the lead until Brianna Losee hit a layup to tie the game at 42. Once the Owls took the lead, Fisher could not bounce back and finished the game 64-56.

Toth and Campbell were the leading scorers for the Owls with 28 and 15 points, respectively. Campbell also recorded the team's most rebounds with 13.

Murphy Carroll and Akridge were the Falcons' lead scorers in the contest. Murphy Carroll scored 19 points while Akridge had 11 points and 13 rebounds. Briggs was another top rebounder with 12 and racked up six points. Roland-Drake, Da Silva, Madison Carroll (Methuen, MA) and Victoria Park (Lynn, MA) also made offensive contributions for the Falcons.

Fisher takes a few days off before heading to Pine Manor College on Friday, December 12, where they will take on Wheelock College in a non-conference match-up at 8:00 pm.
