Chestnut Hill, MA - The Wheelock College women's basketball team cruised past Fisher College in a non-conference game on Brunelli Court, 86-71. Thanks to huge games from sophomore forward Michelle Woods and classmate guard Katie Alsip, the Wildcats improved to 4-4 on the season. The Falcons fell to 1-8.
Woods was one of the biggest stories of the contest as she poured in a career-high 47 points on 15-of-28 shooting from the field with one three-pointer, a 16-for-17 evening at the charity stripe, nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Her 47 points tied a Wheelock women's basketball individual game record from 2008.
Meanwhile, Alsip had a monster night on the glass as she pulled down a career-high 22 rebounds. That placed her third on the all-time list for rebounds in a single game.
The squad's 86 points were the fourth-most by Wheelock in a single game all-time.
In the first half, the Wildcats jumped out to an 11-2 lead after a trifecta by sophomore guard Emily Doyle. Fisher was able to fight back and closed to 13-10 on a lay-up from junior guard Shakieya Roland-Drake (Boston, MA). That would be as close as the visitors would get. With three minutes remaining in the period, Woods and sophomore guard Jaime Grzych combined for 10 points to extend a 33-27 edge to a 43-30 lead at the break.
Wheelock built on their momentum in the second half and continued to stretch the lead. A pair of free throws by Woods earned them their largest lead at 69-49 with 7:09 on the clock. The Falcons continued to fight and closed the gap to 86-71 at the final buzzer.
The Wildcats put three scorers in double-figures as Grzych and Doyle joined Woods with 14 points apiece. Grzych shared team-high honors with four assists.
The Falcons were led by sophomore guard Alexis Akridge (Union, NJ) who netted a career-high 31 points and added 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Rookie guards Murphy and Madison Carroll (Methuen, MA) joined her in double-figures with 14 and 13 points, respectively. Akridge also led the squad with five steals.
Fisher returns to action Saturday as they host University of Maine-Fort Kent in the Fecteau-Leary Gymnasium in Lynn, MA at 1:00 pm.
