The Lady Falcons Fall To The MIT Engineers In Non-Conference Action

Cambridge, MA- The Women's Basketball team traveled across the Charles River Bridge on Tuesday evening in hopes of a non-conference win over the host MIT Engineers. Despite the Falcons outscoring the Engineers in the last frame, the team would come up short, falling 60-47 at the Rockwell Cage. With the loss the Falcons fall to 8-9 while the Engineers improve to 6-7 on the year.

Fisher got off to a strong start in the first stanza, taking a 9-6 lead after five minutes of play while getting contributions from three different starters. However, MIT finished the rest of the quarter with a 12-3 run to hold a 18-12 edge after one. A slow second quarter proved to be costly for the Falcons, scoring only seven points and shooting 20% from the field. The Falcons forced nine MIT turnovers in the second, but could not capitalize, trailing 31-19 at the half.

MIT continued to put on the pressure in the third quarter, hitting five of ten of their shots to go up by as many as 20 points, holding a 49-29 lead with less than three minutes left in the quarter. Misha O'Neal (Tampa, FL) broke up the Engineers run with a made lay-up and the Falcons would head to the third down 49-31. A Jocelyn Luizzi 3-pointer would give MIT their biggest lead of the game at the 3:53 mark putting the home team up 56-35. The Falcons responded with a 9-0 run, capped by a Vivian Lara (Norwalk, CA) trifecta, but the Falcons would run out of time and could not cap off the comeback, falling 60-47.

Lara led all scorers with a 23-point, 7-steal performance, the seven steals being a season-high for the senior guard. With the 23 points, she bumped up her average to a team-leading 16.1 points per game. Jenny-Lynn Eggers (Sonoma, CA) got back on track, adding 12 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals in the losing effort. Four Engineers finished in double figures in the victory, with Annika Sougstad leading the way with 14 points and five rebounds. Luizzi and Cindy Si combined for 22 points and 15 boards for the home team.

The Falcons are right back to work, again traveling locally, this time across the Boston Common, to take on the Emerson College Lions. The action is slated for a 7pm start on Thursday evening at the Bobbi Brown & Steven Plofker Gym in Boston.
