Women's Soccer: Faiella, Wallace lead Falcons past Washington Adventist

Story written by Anthony Perry '08, Fisher College Associate Director of Athletics

LYNN, MASS. – It was senior night for the Fisher College Women's Soccer team this evening and the class of 2023 did not disappoint as they accounted for five of the six goals in the Falcons 6-1 win over visiting Washington Adventist University, under the lights at Manning Field. With the victory, the Falcons are now 6-7-1 overall, 2-0-0 in CAC action, and are closing in on an post-season selection to the conference tournament. The Shock, meanwhile, saw their post-season hopes fade away as they are now 5-6-0 on the season and 0-2-0 in CAC play.

Prior to the start of the contest, the team honored their seniors who have laid the foundation for the future of this program.

The opening 45 minutes were very uneventful as the two teams traded possessions for the majority of the half. In the 31st minute, the Shock were awarded a free kick from just inside the center line and were the beneficiaries of a few lucky bounces. Jamielt Rivera booted the free kick down inside the 18 where it bounced off the turf and Katharina Blume was able to just get enough of her head on it to bounce over the charging keeper and into the back of the net. It was Blume's 15th goal of the season and provided WAU a 1-0 halftime lead.

Playing in front of their families and friends, the senior class came out with a vengeance for the second half. Senior Stephanie Faiella (East Boston, Mass.) collected a loose ball about 25 yards away in the 46th minute and fired off a shot that went over the keeper's outstretch arms and into the back of the net to knot the contest at 1-1. Minutes later, fellow senior Kelly Wallace (Hanover, Mass.) gave the Falcons a lead they wouldn't relinquish as she received a through ball from Faiella and netted her 16th goal of the season. Faiella then made it a 3-1 contest as she scored her second goal of the game and the season in the 65th minute.

Wallace would then add two more goals to complete the hat-trick and sophomore Illiana Fernandez (Hesperia, Calif.) added her own tally to account for the six-goal offensive outburst.

Junior Olivia Leo (Dunmore, Pa.) returned to action in net for the Falcons and picked up the win as she made five saves on six shots. WAU's Elena Lopez made 13 saves in defeat.

Fisher will host Framingham State on Wednesday evening in their next scheduled contest. Game time is slated for 5pm at Hormel Stadium in Medford.
