Women's Volleyball Captures Their First Win Of The Season In Straight Sets Over Five Towns College

Dix Hills, NY- The Women's Volleyball team opened up the season with four tough losses last weekend, so were eager to get back to their winning ways. On Wednesday night, they did just that as they cruised past the Five Towns College Sound (0-4) in straight sets 25-23, 25-14, 25-10.

The two teams opened the match with an epic battle, matching points the entire first set. The highest lead of the game was just three points, each team owning the difference once over the match. Fisher earned their biggest lead at 12-9 after a kill from Charisse Lazu (Trujillo Alto, PR), but Five Towns went on an 8-2 run over the next 10 points, taking their biggest lead at 17-14. Fisher bounced back quickly though, tying it up 21-21 on a FTC error. A Lia Aime (Las Piedras, PR) service ace gave Fisher the lead back at 22-21 and they went on to take the first set after two kills from senior Cynthia Huerta (Salinas, CA) and Aime to go up 1-0.

The second set started in a similar fashion as the two teams traded points through the first 18, with the two teams tied at nine points a piece. It was at this point that the Falcons offense came alive, going on an 8-1 run to take a 17-10 lead, capped by two straight FTC errors. Five Towns battled back though, taking the next four points making it a 18-14 game. Another Fisher run proved to be too much for the hosts as the Falcons scored the last seven points of the set to go up 2-0. Freshman Emma Soubosky (Leominster, MA) earned her first kill of the match for the final point as the Falcons won 25-14.

Fisher started right where they left off in the third set, winning the first four points with freshman Katherine Rodriguez (Fajardo, PR) serving to go up 4-0. The Falcons added to their lead with another 6-0 run minutes later to take a 12-3 lead early on. Five Towns did all they could to force a game four, but the Falcons led by as many as 15 points and went on to take the third set 25-10. Lazu led the way in the final set, earning three kills to help lead her team to the first win of the season.

Huerta continued her strong play for her team as she finished with 14 kills and 20 digs on the night. Lazu had her best game as a Falcon, tallying nine kills and seven digs in the victory. Aime played well defensively as she tacked on 14 digs, while Rodriguez led the way with 21 assists, giving her 73 in just five games.

The Falcons will look to continue the winning as they visit the Lesley University Lynx Thursday evening at 7pm. The game can be watched live by clicking here.
