The Colonels Prove To Be Too Much For The Falcons

Milton, MA- The Falcons hit a bump in the road Monday evening when they were defeated in straight sets by the Curry College Colonels, 25-13, 25-13, 25-12. With the loss the Falcons fall to 2-7 while the Colonels improve to 9-3, winning their seventh straight match.

The first set started well for the Falcons as they got out to an early 3-2 lead after an Erica Nunez (Dorchester, MA) kill, but that would be the last time the Falcons were ahead in this set. The Colonels used a 9-2 run to go up 11-5, but Fisher hung tough and nabbed the next three points to put them down by three at 11-8 capped by a Charisse Lazu (Trujillo Alto, PR) service ace. Another Colonels run put the game out of reach for the Falcons, as Curry closed out the first set winning 14 out of the next 19 points to win 25-13.

Set number two saw a similar start where the Falcons hung in early, down by just one after six points. But a Curry 10-2 run put the home team up 13-5 early on. Fisher did score three straight points with Lazu at the service line serving up a pair of aces to get her team back to an 18-9 deficit, but Curry was able to close it out though, scoring the sets last three points to win the second set 25-13 and taking a two set lead.

Fisher was eager to stay in this one as they did not back down, despite being down 0-2. Junior Lia Aime (Las Piedras, PR) did all she could to lead her team, earning a kill to put the Falcons down by just one at 6-5 early in the third set. Curry responded though, going on a 10-2 run to give the home team an 18-8 lead before Katherine Rodriguez (Fajardo, PR) earned a kill to take away the Curry momentum. Unfortunately it was too late and the Colonels hung on to take the third set, clinching the sweep.

The Falcons were led by Cynthia Huerta (Salinas, CA) who tacked on seven kills, eight digs, and three service aces in the losing effort. Rodriguez and Aime also played well contributing with a combined 22 digs, while Rodriguez added 14 assists. Curry was impressive as they committed just seven errors in the match and were led by Lexi Pereira who had 12 kills and 13 digs. Senior Lexi Bell also notched her 1,000 career dig in the win, adding five more to her career total in the win.

Fisher will have some much needed rest, having played five matches in less than a week, and will head to the University of Maine-Fort Kent this Saturday for a doubleheader. The action is slated for an 11am start.
