Women's Volleyball Cruises To A Doubleheader Sweep Of The Gators

Chestnut Hill, MA- The Women's Volleyball team got back on the winning track on Thursday night as they took a pair of matches from the host Pine Manor College, 3-0 and 3-0. The Falcons have yet to lose a set to the Gators in six meetings over the past three seasons since volleyball became a varsity sport at Fisher, as they are 6-0 lifetime over PMC. The doubleheader sweep improves the Falcons record to 6-10, while the Gators fall to 0-7.

Match 1-

The Falcons offense proved to be too much for the Gators out of the gate as a 12-1 run was all Fisher needed to comfortably take the first set 25-10. Erica Nunez (Dorchester, MA) led the way in the first set for the Falcons as she had a season best five kills in the first set while Cynthia Huerta (Salinas, CA) had four service aces in the first set to get the Falcons off to a 1-0 lead. Freshman AII Player of the Week, Katherine Rodriguez (Fajardo, PR) served 16 straight points, giving the Falcons a 17-0 lead. Over that stretch, 13 of the 16 Falcons points were by way of the service ace for the freshman setter. Fisher closed the second set out with an 8-4 run to take the second set 25-4. The Gators did not back down though as they battled back in the third set, trailing by just three after 13 points as the scoreboard read 8-5. But that would be the closest they would get as the Falcons would earn the final seven points of the set to claim the 25-10 victory, claiming the match 3-0.

Rodriguez finished the match with an impressive 18 service aces, while Huerta led the way with eight kills. Charisse Lazu (Trujillo Alto, PR) and Nunez combined for 10 kills in the match to contribute to the victory.

Match 2-

Rodriguez picked up right where she left off in the first set of the second match, serving 16 straight times for the Falcons, putting the visitors up 16-0. She tacked on another eight service aces during the run to give the Falcons a comfortable lead and forcing a Gators timeout. PMC came out of the timeout with purpose, winning six out of the next nine points to make it a 19-6 game, but the Falcons again took control, finishing the set on a 6-1 run to claim the first set 25-7. The second set was the most exciting of the evening as the Gators hung tight with the Falcons throughout. With the Falcons up 6-5, FC went on a key 10-3 run putting the visitors up 16-8. PMC responded with their own 7-2 run, making it a 18-15 game. The Falcons turned it on again and finished the set with their own 7-2 run to cap a 25-17 set number two victory. Unfortunately for the Gators, Rodriguez was at the line to start the third set of the night and she proved to be the difference in the match, again serving 16 straight points putting her team up 16-0. The Gators finally broke the streak on a service error, earning their only point of the set, as Huerta finished the last nine points at the line for the 25-1 set victory, clinching the 3-0 win.

Rodriguez tallied another 15 aces in the match to go along with 19 assists. Huerta tacked on another 10 kills, and Lazu led the Falcons with four digs in the win. The Falcons finished the night with just 11 attacking errors in two matches, their best total of the season.

The Falcons will be back in action this weekend when they head to Rhode Island for the CCRI tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
