Women's Volleyball: Falcons sweep tri-match at Castleton

CASTLETON, VT. – The Fisher College Women's Volleyball team extended their winning streak to five this afternoon as they swept both matches against Rhode Island College and Castleton University. The Falcons are now 11-3 on the season and will close out the month of September with a match at New England College on Tuesday evening.

Final: Fisher College 3, Rhode Island College 0

Fisher picked up their first victory of the afternoon by set scores of 25-14, 25-17, and 25-22. Freshman Alicia Tkach (Middleton, Mass.) led the way offensively as she recorded a .375 hitting percentage with nine kills. Senior Macy Barnes (Duarte, Calif.) had a stellar all-around performance with a team-high 10 kills and 17 digs while classmate Ashly Velazquez (Downey, Calif.) added seven kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Paola Velazquez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) dished out 32 assists to guide the Falcon offense with fellow sophomore Edsyl Irizarry (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) controlling the backline with 18 digs to go along with her six service aces.

Rhode Island College (4-5 overall) was guided by the efforts of sophomore Rhiannon Hodovanec (Feeding Hills, Mass.) and senior Angelly Polanco (Providence, R.I.), who each had eight kills. Hodovanec also scooped up 13 digs to lead the defensive efforts while sophomore Natalie Reid (North Attleboro, Mass.) handed out 14 assists.

In the final match of the afternoon's tri-match, the Falcons bested the host Spartans by set scores of 25-11, 28-26, and 25-12. Barnes was the difference maker in the contest as she hammered down 16 kills and recorded a .316 hitting percentage along with collecting 17 digs. Ashly Velazquez added 10 kills and seven digs while senior Aya Al-Juraishi (Walnut, Calif.) chipped in with five kills. Paola Velazquez registered 29 assists in the finale as Irizarry totaled 20 digs and four service aces.

Castleton sophomore Hailey Martinovich (Rochester, N.Y.) led the team with nine kills and 11 digs, both team highs. Classmate Maddie Delsignore (Queensbury, N.Y.) added 10 digs and a team-high 17 assists in the loss and freshman Jenna Schott (Burwell, Neb.) contributed four kills and nine digs for the Spartans.
