Women's Volleyball: Falcons fall twice at UMFK

FORT KENT, MAINE – The Fisher College Women's Volleyball team's six-game winning streak came to an end this evening as the Falcons fell twice on the road at the University of Maine-Fort Kent. With the pair of losses, the Falcons slide to just 12-5 overall on the season while the Bengals improve to 10-4.

Game One: Maine-Fort Kent 3, Fisher College 1 (Final)

The Falcons dropped the opener of the double-header to the Bengals by set scores of 25-17, 29-27, 25-22, and 25-21.

Senior Macy Barnes (Duarte, Calif.) paced the offensive attack for the Falcons as she hammered down a game-high 15 kills while also totaling the game-high of 26 digs. Classmate Ashly Velazquez (Downey, Calif.) added eight kills with two total blocks and freshman Alicia Tkach (Middleton, Mass.) finished with seven kills and four total blocks. Sophomore setter Paola Velazquez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) handed out 29 assists and scooped up 17 digs in the opener while classmate libero Edsyl Irizarry (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) matched Barnes with the game-high of 26 digs.

Fort Kent saw Jamie Nena register the team-high of 14 kills as both sophomore Kayla Iwata (Hilo, Hawaii) and senior Abbi Thompson (Monroe, Ohio) added eight kills each in the win. Iwata was the assist leader for the Bengals with 24 helpers and sophomore libero Halle Ham (Richmond, Texas) collected 23 digs defensively. Freshman Mylei Moli (Fairfield, Calif.) and senior Danae Ford (Placerville, California) also chipped in with six kills each.

Game Two: Maine-Fort Kent 3, Fisher College 0 (Final)

The battle continued into the second game of the twin-bill however Fort Kent was able to take the three-set match by scores of 25-17, 25-21, and 25-16.

Barnes once again led the team as she totaled 13 kills and 13 digs. Senior Ashly Velazquez (Downey, Calif.) collected 12 digs to go along with her four kills and classmate Aya Al-Juraishi (Walnut, Calif.) chipped in with five kills. Paola Velazquez dished out 21 assists and picked up 13 digs while Irizarry paced the defensive effort with a team-high 16 digs.

Iwata was the star of the finale for the Bengals as she recorded 12 kills, 12 assists, and collected 11 digs over the three sets. Nena and Moil each registered seven kills while Thompson added four kills. Ham led the defense with a game-high 19 digs and sophomore Carla Rodriguez (Gijon, Spain) contributed eight assists in the win.

Fisher will look to start a new winning streak as they return to the court on Tuesday evening as they battle Fitchburg State University. Game time is set for 6pm in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. UMFK will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to Portland, Maine for a tri-match with Central Maine CC and Southern Maine CC.
