Women's Volleyball: Falcons sweep tri-match at Albertus

NEW HAVEN, CONN. – The Fisher College Women's Volleyball team earned their first two victories of the season this afternoon as they swept both Purchase State University (N.Y.) and Albertus Magnus College in a tri-match hosted by Albertus. The pair of wins push the Fisher Falcons above .500 at 2-1 on the young season while the Albertus Falcons slide to 1-2 with Purchase State Panthers falling to 0-2 in their season opening matches. Albertus defeated Purchase State in straight sets to begin the day.

Game Two: Fisher College 3, Purchase State University 0 (Final)

The Falcons picked up their first win of the season with a clean straight-set triumph over Purchase State by set scores of 25-16, 25-8, 25-8.

Senior Macy Barnes (Duarte, Calif.) was the team leader as she hammered down 11 kills with a .364 hitting percentage while also contributing 12 digs defensively. Classmate Aya Al-Juriashi (Walnut, Calif.) and freshman Caroline Saucier (Sarasota, Fla.) each added five winners, with Saucier recording a .571 hitting percentage. Sophomore setter Paola Velazquez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) dished out 28 assists in the day's middle match while senior Natalia Ortiz (Humacao, Puerto Rico) shined defensively with 15 digs. Sophomore Lilliana Figueroa (Fajardo, Puerto Rico) chipped in with four kills and four digs in the victory.

The Panthers saw senior Samantha Fasce (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) pace the offense with a team-high five kills. Classmate Karina Medina (Brooklyn, N.Y.) provided additional help on the offensive side of the net with three kills while also handing out three assists and collecting 12 digs. Fasce finished the contest with eight digs and fellow senior Priscilla Choo (New York, N.Y.) dished out three assists in the setback.

Game Three: Fisher College 3, Albertus Magnus College 0 (Final)

In a battle of the Falcons, it was the Fisher Falcons who came out on top with a win by set scores of 25-12, 25-16, and 27-25.

Barnes once again set the tone for the Fisher offense as she registered the game-high of 11 kills with a .333 hitting percentage. Senior Ashly Velazquez (Downey, Calif.) chipped in with a six-kill, six-dig effort while Saucier also collected six winners. Paola Velazquez notched a 27-assist performance while Ortiz finished the afternoon with 14 digs.

Senior Diana Kalman (East Haven, Conn.) was the leader in the clubhouse for Albertus as she finished with eight kills and eight digs. Junior Elizabeth Lynch (Stratford, Conn.) added six kills and three digs while sophomore Rachael Pellegrini (Clinton, Conn. handed out 12 assists.

Fisher will return to the court on Wednesday night for the home opener as they host Fitchburg State University inside the Pappas Gymnasium starting at 7pm. Albertus will host Mitchell College in a Tuesday night contest while Purchase State travels to Brooklyn College on Thursday night.
