Women's Volleyball: Falcons pick up pair of wins at VSU-Johnson

JOHNSON, VT. – The Fisher College Women's Volleyball team picked up their first two victories of the season this afternoon as they took down Vermont State University – Johnson, 3-0 and 3-1 in double header hosted by the Badgers. The Falcons are now 2-3 on the young season while VSU-Johnson falls to 2-4.

Game One: Fisher College 3, VSU-Johnson 0 (Final)

Fisher took the opening match of the day by set scores of 25-16, 25-8, and 25-20.

Junior Lilliana Figueroa (Fajardo, Puerto Rico) hammered down 11 kills and recorded a .429 hitting percentage as she guided the Falcons to the first victory of 2023. Freshman Andrea Detres (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico) registered a .571 hitting percentage with four winners while a pair of sophomores, Alicia Tkach (Middleton, Mass.) and Caroline Saucier (Sarasota, Fla.), also finished with four kills each. Junior setter Paola Velazquez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) dished out 12 assists while smashing four service aces and collecting six digs. Classmate Edsyl Irizarry (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) patrolled the backline with 16 digs in the win.

The Badgers were paced by the offensive efforts from senior Nataliea Medina (San Jose, Calif.), who led the team with eight kills. Freshman Vivienne Babbott (Hinesburg, Vt.) chipped in with seven kills while sophomore Max Ludlow (Arvada, Colo.) added three kills and 11 assists in the loss. Junior Alana Lewis (Omaha, Neb.) recorded the game high of 17 digs for VSU-Johnson.

Game Two: Fisher College 3, VSU-Johnson 1 (Final)

The Falcons rolled right into the final match of the day and claimed victory by set scores of 25-17, 21-25, 25-23, and 25-15.

Tkach was the team leader with eight kills and 10 digs while Figueroa added seven kills in the win. Freshman Natalia Sanchez (Leon. Mexico) broke out and tallied six kills and picked up nine digs. Velazquez dished out 20 assists with 12 digs and Irizarry finished with 13 digs for the Falcons. Freshman Sofia Campos (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) was stellar along the backline as she totaled nine digs.

VSU-Johnson saw Babbott register the game-high of 17 kills with both Ludlow and freshman Avianna Garcia (Rapid City, S.D.) adding six winners apiece. Ludlow was outstanding all around as she finished with 18 assists and 15 digs, both team-highs. Senior Mercedes Durden (Fuerth, Germany) scooped up 14 digs and freshman Sasha Khomutetsky (Hollywood, Calif.) reached double figures with 13 assists.

Fisher will remain on the road for their next scheduled contest as their tour of New England continues with a trip to New Haven, Conn. on Tuesday evening for a date at Albertus Magnus College. Game time is slated for 7pm. VSU-Johnson will travel to SUNY-Canton in their next scheduled matchup slated for Friday, September 15th.
